It's up at the Source

Seems Bane's looking at some problems and we have the next storyline starting up. Can't wait.

Scandal: "Oh, that's what they look like."

Scandal: "Jewish. Who knew?"

Scandal: "Bane! Pointing is rude!"

Scandal: "Sling that back over your shoulder and let's talk."

Scandal: "Where did you buy the little mask?"

Scandal: "Bane if you shave one area, you have to shave the others."

Scandal: "I'm here to perform your bris. As you can see, I brought my equipment."

Scandal: "Was it really necessary to tattoo 'I broke the Bat' down the length?"

Scandal: "Annnd reason #17,564 I'm glad I'm a lesbian."

They write themselves!

Nice little pun there with The House of Secrets intro caption.

(God, what a crossover THAT would be...Bane vs Cain, anyone?)

Holy crap. The first few pages were creepy as hell. Is it too much to hope that Smyth and his sidekicks get bullets themselves?

I don't imagine the Secret Six will be very kind to them. Especially since I'm getting a Santa Prisca vibe from the opening.

The trick to successfully pulling off a series about villains, like SUICIDE SQUAD or SECRET SIX, is to recall that many audiences will happily root for a bad guy so long as the person being victimized is demonstrably much worse.

Gail is unsettlingly good at that part of the formula.

Hm.
White hair.
All-white clothing, for that matter.
Racist.
Smug, but well-spoken.
Absolutely no respect for human life.
Involved in a story with Artemis.

Hm. If "Smyth" is an alias, I think I know who this guy is.

If so, his return to human form has not demonstrably reversed his trajectory toward increasingly elemental demonic evil. Asquith was a loon from the start, but he didn't get "casually slaughter a dozen people just for sadistic kicks" until pretty late in the game, when he was already beginning to transform.

I think his appearance in the annual showed complete disregard for human life. He got people killed showing off, and planned on worse, but didn't think a thing of it. He was quite willing to kill behind closed doors. He made it clear that he thought some people were just born superior (coming from "good bloodlines"). I can easily buy him doing something like this, using "well, they're inferior, not from good stock at all. Have I ever mentioned I'm related to Benjamin Franklin?" as justification.

Ah, but there's still a line between callous disinterest in human life and active interest in destroying human life. What we see here is not a guy killing because it's convenient or it accomplishes anything; he's killing for the sole sake of the sadistic entertainment value in breaking a woman's mind. I'm not saying that's remotely out of character for Asquith, it'd fit right in with his portrayal from... oh, roughly the open mob war out. He got more and more corrupt, more and more actively malignant and more and more careless about what he did and who knew it as WML's run wore on - in correlation with his growing more and more consumed by the magic, until he was eventually literally a demon as well as morally one.

So if this *is* Asquith, he's managed to shed the "literally" part while maintaining the "morally" part, which suggests a mastery of his magic that he didn't have last time around, making him a potentially more dangerous foe. In which case Diana better hope the Six prove more useful than Circe.

I'm not sure it's simple sadism. He's crushing a voice of dissent in his mining operation. Word will spread, and it'll be a long time before anyone claims to smell another gas leak. He's lost a few workers, but the rest will learn to fear him.

Of course this is all based on the assumption that it's Asquith. Could easily be a completely new character, or a different old character. Hey, maybe it's Blue Snowman in a REALLY good male-impersonator disguise!

He's crushing a voice of dissent in his mining operation.

Eh, as Icon says downthread, killing everyone in the crew is highly counterproductive (there's a fear-rebellion threshold that he's definitely crossing if this is his default reaction to dissent), and there's no reason not to believe this woman about the gas leak. If he's trying to do anything here beyond tormenting this lady, he's doin' it wrong, and is an idiot more than anything else. If he's totally indifferent to the actual mining work being done, though, and merely relishes the misery (whether because he's genuinely collecting slaves just to have a pool of sufferers handy, or because he's got a long-enough term goal and enough resources that a tunnel collapse is not a meaningful setback), the scene makes more sense and he's a more formidable villain.

Hey, maybe it's Blue Snowman in a REALLY good male-impersonator disguise!

Would he be the White Snow Man this time around?

And for those who will be traveling this summer. Avoid the House Of Secrets..Hop over to the House Of Mystery (It's HOM without the E, which stands for evil!). The beds were comfortable and the TVs were huge. They also served a good breakfast...Not House Of Pancakes good, but almost.

See, my only issue with it is that this shows Smyth as evil, but also an idiot, and idiots don't impress me.

Ignoring a problem like a methane explosion doesn't make it go away, and what does it benefit Smyth that there's a mammoth explosion in his mine? It wastes slaves and destroys the mining work already achieved. A truly malevolent bastard would have thanked the woman, taken precautions against an explosion, and THEN dealt with her for insubordiantion.

And killing THAT many productive slaves also seemed... excessive. I dunno, megalomaniacal villains these days, always trying TOO hard.

On the other hand, it's not like he is going to run out of slaves or anything. Slaves are countless and cost nothing.

You're assuming though that the woman was telling the truth about the gas. I'm sure they have standard precautions in place, and she has every reason to lie (slave labor an' all that) while none of the over-seers have confirmed her story.

I'd bet his overreaction discouraged everyone else too. Or he just got carried away. He's not a nice guy, obviously ;)
