Man, I wish they'd stuck with this version of Donna's origin instead of the 'magical sister/playmate for Diana born from her reflection and kidnapped by Dark Angel' version. This one is A: relatively simple, and B: works so well with Diana's general character. It's like her version of what Batman did with Dick, and shows the difference between the two very nicely. Batman took in Dick as his ward because he empathized with his plight - he had also lost his parents due to foul play at a young age, and he felt the need to help this younger version of himself deal with his rage. Their whole relationship is based on father/son mentor/pupil dynamics. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, didn't NEED to relate to Donna - she took her in solely as a matter of kindness. Here was this baby girl, lost and alone, bawling with fear in the middle of a burning building. She needed help, and Diana gave it to her. Donna had nothing to do with her - she could have turned her over to an orphanage without a single pang of conscience - but she chose to do more. Why? Because she COULD. And there lies the difference between Batman and Wonder Woman, both of whom are good people, but with very different motivations. Batman is all about the personal - he has sworn that if he can help it, no one else will feel the pain and loneliness he has felt. He does what he does out of empathy. Diana, on the other hand, is purely altruistic - she could have chosen to stay on Themyscira and be a princess, but instead she put herself into the contest to go to Man's World, and became its champion without a second thought. She has empathy, too, but it's not what drives her - she became Wonder Woman solely because she's a good person, and wants to help people. In short, if Donna had stayed with this origin, we would have had a very nice illustration of Diana's character, a simple background story for her, and a way of thematically linking the Amazons with the rest of the DCU. Instead, we get a garbled mess that gets more and more complicated with every new revision. Bleh. Oh, and I like Terry. I don't get what all the hubbub was about - he seems like a nice guy, and it's nice to read a 'wedding issue' that isn't interrupted by several supervillains crashing the party. Oh, and - MICHAEL JACKSON AT THE WEDDING!
