To the series's detriment, I'd say. Their pervasiveness was to the point where it was actually distracting and pulle me out of the stories. And the few that were truly clever and charming got drowned out amidst all the others.
From the script excerpts on Gene Ha's website, Alan Moore only asked for a small fraction of them. I'm probably in the minority, given how many fans of the series love the Easter eggs, but I honestly wish the artists had toned it down.
