Books of Magic - Who is Tim Hunter?
First post on InsaneJournal, please let me know if I do something wrong.

A post the other day reminded me of The Books of Magic, and I noticed that there are no tags here for Tim Hunter! I wanted to remedy this, and thought that people in this community might enjoy part of The Books of Magic Annual #3: A Thousand Deaths of Timothy Hunter.

These 8 pages from the 39 page annual show a story about a Timothy Hunter in a somewhat familiar universe (well, actually two Timothy Hunters, but neither of them are the main Timothy Hunter character).

We start the scan at page 20 - the previous pages have shown the deaths of various other Tim Hunters, in various universes. This universe seems somewhat familiar.

"My parents died horribly too, kid, so I reckon me an' you are gonna get along just famously..."

Note: all these characters appear in the Books of Magic, as well, but.. differently. Molly is a major character.

Hope you enjoyed it!

I remember this from scans_daily 1.0. I still find John-in-a-goofy-costume to be hilarious. XD

OK, the 'HAW HAW HAW' panel cracked me up more than it had any right to,

I can't tell if it's a subtle parody of Jack Chick or merely a jab at religious xenophobes in general.

The use of 'HAW HAW HAW' pushes it over into 'not particularly subtle Chick reference' I think....but 'Chick reference' and 'jab at a certain type of religious person' are hardly exclusive.

I literally pointed and laughed. It seemed the only reasonable reaction.

Anyone recognize the other superhero versions of Vertigo characters? If you read Morrison's DOOM PATROL, you should.

Ah yes, the Fantastic Four pastiche, "And Men Shall Call Him--Hero." I posted that on s_d 1.0.

I like Books of Magic, but A Thousand Deaths of Timothy Hunter was a huge disappointment to me when I read it. While it did provide some background story on the Other, it quickly grew dull and repetitive: Introduce a new world with a different Tim Hunter, then kill off said Tim Hunter and destroy the world. Several of the worlds were actually kind of interesting, but nothing whatsoever was done with them. It was "hey, this looks sorta neat, whooops there it's all destroyed."

By the time they got to this Teen Titans parody, I was fed up with the entire thing. There seemed to be no point to any of it, other than show what a bastard the Other was, and I already knew that from the regular series.

Oh well. Even Books of Magic is allowed one misstep.

Funnily enough, that third panel on page 22 makes Constantine look more like Lucifer.

Wow. Now that's a fun parody of the new Teen Titans.

I certainly liked this better than anything else that Millar has written recently.
