k, dialogue and accent is the biggest tool to create character in a writer's toolbox. I think you may have a point in that he has consistently made black characters talk in "uneducated" slang, but I think the exact way you're making it loses me. If I had characters talking out of an automatic translater, you can dang sure bet I'd have 'em talkin' funny. Because it creates memorable characters.
I also see what you're talking about with Moore/O'Neill. It's the cultural equivalent of "too soon!" It's so tricky. They want to tell stories about the world they live in, but the stories travel to the rest of the world too. Somebody always gets hurt. You're as thoughtful as you can be. In a lot of ways, here is the way I see the problem:
The artist becomes interested in something In order to study it more fully, they create something about it In the process they learn everything they can about the subject And at the end they have a wider, deeper insight than ever before.
Where is the problem? Well, you don't create the work at the end. You created it at the beginning, when you are clueless. Right at the point that you reach your maximum insight, you're done.
What are you going to do? Go back and write it all again?
This is why the creations are often less wise than the creations.
*kali I do see the irony of writing an entire post in the second person after my response to you, but nobody minds being compared to an artist. Everybody hates being compared to a racist.
