Do you think the artist was trying to color the boy's skin brown or yellow, originally?

It's a grammar error. Superman says in the penultimate panel, "Because of his colour? As a matter of fact he [the boy of colour] WAS the lad [who stopepd the lion with his quick-thinking]!"

Notice how as Superman says, "How do you know it wasn't the other lad?", the white kid points at the, er, non-white kid. That will be Superman's next public service message: It's Impolite to Point.

Oddly enough, I spent the last hour feeling insanely angry at the BNP. This was nice to see, even if it is a bit silly.

The British National Party... or British Nazi Party, more like. Seriously, they're literally descended from WWII-era Nazi sympathizers.

They're a political party in the UK with pretty much one issue - evicting all non-whites from Great Britain. A lot like the militia nuts here in the USA, only way more radical but not as well-armed.

"British National Party", formerly the "National Front", radical far Right political movement in the UK. One of Britain's biggest embarrassments, politically speaking.

Likes; Racism, scaremongering and spreading rumours about how all immigrants are moneygrubbing, jobstealing, probable terrorists. Nasty, vile and generally loathesome. The sort of people it's actually okay to feel good about despising.

There's the legendary graffitti "I've got half a mind to join the BNP" and underneath someone had added "Don't worry, that's all you'll need"

Ah, I remember my dad talking about them when I lived over in Kent. I was too young to understand though. Now I'm back in Texas, and the BNP sounds all too familiar: all those people down here who hate "the mexicans." Unfortunatly, they aren't as ridiculed as the BNP seems to be...

Heheh. Nobody tell them that the first time I ever heard of them (just the acronym and that they were an extant political party, nothing about their actual platform), my immediate thought was "huh. Black national party, maybe?"

Hmmm, then can't you argue that the picts and gael got there first, so everybody can GTFO?

You know, if you go back far enough, almost everybody's people have been almost wiped out by another set of people.

The context is, Superman heard Mr. Carson was a giant racist, and decided to teach him a lesson in true Silver Age fashion.

The escaped lion, the two boys in their matching "W"-themed outfits, the deliberate vagueness about which of them was the hero... all part of Superman's plan.

Doesn't anyone paint anymore? To get different shades of brown, you put red and green together. That's the same way comics used to do it, and the colorist here forgot to add the red (or it dropped off). This happened a lot in old comics, which is why the production people preferred simple primary colors and disliked purple, gray, tan.. anything that required more than one overlay.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

[info]liarashadowsong
2009-05-22 01:15 pm UTC (link)
The point here isn't "You need to overlay dots of red and green to get brown". I know that little fact, and so do a lot of other people here, I'm willing to bet. The point we like is "OMG green dude! Maybe he's a cousin of Brainy or Martian Manhunter! *gigglesnort* [/not so secretly about twelve years old on the inside]". Although the reasoning behind old comics production people preferring primary colors and not liking using purple and gray and tan and such is quite interesting, thanks.

The same was true for Iron Man. He went to the gold armor because the first issue came out with inconsistent coloring.

Aside from the frequent miscolorings, it's also the reason a lot of old comics had bits of color extending beyond the characters.. the overlays were put on carelessly or slipped during production.

Early Marvel often had panels that were monochrome or figures all red or blue. This wasn't an artistic effect, but just an attempt to save time.
