Black-ish' night story from Batman Beyond..
At the last NYCC I found a .50 cent box with almost the whole run of Batman Beyond, I finally got around to reading it. I think its one of the better cartoon adaptations .

Many felt this show/story had nowhere to go after "Return of the Joker", but I disagree. I think there was much more to say about Terry and Bruce.

I definitely agree about the fact that there was more to explore with Terry, following the Return of the Joker storyline. Given that Bruce generally established the Animated Universe with his series, and was joined by Supes, he was the general mainstay. Batman was in every series, and to come to Batman Beyond, and have him replaced, it was fascinating to see what his place would be in this world, and how Terry would be accepted by the other heroes.

I particularly loved the efforts to establish a viable rogues gallery for Terry, rather than the easier method of using Bruce's villains without explaining how they could live so long and torment him (except, of course, the Joker. It was vital to bring back Bruce's greatest foe and put the new Batman to the test against him, and it was great to see Terry erase the Joker completely by proving he was as good as Bruce whilst being a different ballgame completely). I especially liked Blight, because it was effectively the creation of Terry's own Joe Chill. Inque was the best of the bunch, even if it was a little creepy with the odd sexual tension of some moments, and I don't remember his name, but the guy who could manipulate sound was fascinating, too, especially in his second appearance.

	The return of Freeze also showed the difference...Terry wanting to give him a second chance while Bruce was believing he could not and the lovely final lines (paraphrased...). "Looks like you were right all along..." "I wish I was wrong." (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

I also loved how Bruce, despite his age, could relate to Terry in some circumstances, like after one of the Royal Flush Gang storylines, and Terry is obviously a little annoyed about Ten, and Bruce just jovially tells him "Let me tell you about a woman named Selina Kyle', as the show ends.

It was just so much win, and the best part was that it wasn't even a group of guys trying to top what Dini and Timm and the gang had done with the older show, it was them actively referencing and building upon what they'd established, and it worked so well.

The villains were generally interesting, Blight for sure (though technically he's more of a Lew Moxon character, since the one who did the killing was Mr Fixx.

Inque was a great villain, though it came as something of a shock to discover she must have been in her late 30's at least since she had a daughter in her late teens.

The sonic powered guy was Shriek, and also worth of mention were Spellbinder, Curare and the hunter guy whose name escapes me.

Thanks for the heads-up with the names of the villains, I couldn't remember them because it's been so long since I last watched it.

I did enjoy the variety of villains, though. Shriek was one of my favourites, because his Vendetta against Terry was something Terry had accidentally created on his own, and I liked Spellbinder, but Inque was always my favourite. There was just something special about her, that you felt a little sympathetic for her and what happened to her, even after she turned one of the few people who gave a damn about her into a melting blob of a freak.

	Her name was Aquagirl, not Dolphin. Her mom was probably Dolphin, it never said. But the show did say Aquaman was her father. (Reply to this)

I just realised... it's usually Scott with the Mother Box, and Barda with her Mighty Mega Rod... did Kirby intend this as a reflection of how traditional male and female roles are turned on their head with Mr. and Mrs. Free? Though I always thought the Justice League episode was a little weird, because the JL hadn't been mentioned before; you'd think it would've come up. That, and the fact that Superman had apparently been mind-controlled for years. :( Not to mention the glaring plot hole that creates...ah, well.

And Black Light--no use saying "Ack! Choke!" when you're being strangled.

	That subject gets adressed in the season 3 dvd. The fashback was an after thought when the rest of the episode was finished. Therefore when it was sent to Asia for work the animator didn't realize the change and used the original color for the Superman costume. (Reply to this) (Parent)

	Precisely - he is an interspecies mulatto, with his wings coming from his mother and his predominant skin color coming from his father - or, at least, so it is presented in the cartoon. That she has European features, you mean? Isn't she of mixed parentage as well? I thought it was canon that her father was African and her mother was... well, undetermined, since we never saw her, but some variety of American, right? So maybe she was white, and Vixen got her features but her daddy's skin color - or perhaps she was a Creole from New Orleans. They used to really emphasize the European nature of their heritage, so if she came from that sort of a background, it's not surprising her daughter has European features.

	Well, who knows? I was refering to Vixen as being "the first black super-heroine in the DCU" (and thats a debate in and of itself) and her being portrayed with non type traits. Then again some people have way too much free time. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Personally, I don't think it matters in the slightest - unless it's a plot point that a character is of mixed parentage, what earthly difference does it make?
It may have something to do with 'race paranoia', as it were. There seems to be a tendency among 'minorities' (I put that in quotes because a number of them are actually becoming majorities at this point) to get awfully picky about just how black/asian/chicano/whatever someone is. 'You're not really black - your grandmother was white', or 'you're no chicano - you don't speak Spanish', etc., etc. It's like these things are quantifiable elements, like hops in beer, and if you don't have the exact right amount in you, you don't qualify. I look forward to the point when none of these things will MATTER - I mean, talk about nitpicking.

	Because of the freakiness of skin genetics, a lot of people born from, say, a white mother and a black father will have skin tones to either extreme. 	Oh, absolutely, but I've seen screenshots from Batman Beyond and JLU that feature Warhawk, and he definitely tends more towards his father's side of things. He's nowhere near as dark-skinned as his dad, but he is, to say the least, extremely tan. He does not have the generic Caucasian coloration seen here. (Reply to this) (Parent)
