Society in general became much more protective (over-protective, some might say) of kids sometime in the 1990s, I think. The idea of children wandering unescorted from house to house on Halloween night or going out to play Saturday morning and being told to come back by suppertime, taking BB guns (or real 22s) to shoot tin cans way out in the woods... well, it's all pretty rare these days.
