Uncanny X-Men #509

She's baaaack..........

Could this be the resurection of British Betsy?! What makes this even more confusing for me is that on future covers...

Now, I'm obviously going to get flamed for this, so, without further ado...
I actually prefer Asian Betsy.
Flaming comence....*gets inside box*

Don't think so, it's the clothed Japanese Psylocke in the machine with the helmet, it's the naked English Psylocke getting up off the table.

I like asian ninja Psylocke as well, it makes her stand out among all the other generic telepaths and gives her a more hands-on role in combat. Being more dynamic makes her a stronger female archetype than the old "weak mentalist girl" cliche, and it makes her more visually interesting as well. After all, fight scenes and action poses are a lot more fun to draw and look at then yet another "stand and make a headache face" panel.

It's a boost for her character, and I hope they keep both around.

I think the main problem with Asian Betsy is that the change was done to appease an artistic whim, and has been played out badly. Of course, Claremont has not treated many of his "pet" characters good, just look at Kitty or Rachel... but Betsy seems to have gotten the worst of the last 15 years of Chris Claremont scripts.

As I said before, I don't trust Matt Fraction with this plot.

It should have stayed buried...

I'm guessing they're going to say there was a bit of Kwannon left in her old body or some residual psychic-whatever and used it to raise Kwannon from the dead.

Or some bullshit like that.

And she's got a new trick. Purple-haired Betsy is ten times as slick as the last time, the last time you saw her. Now you can see why we really adore her.

You might think her new trick is sick: sawing a mutant in half with a stick the "focused totality of her psychic powers"...

On one hand.. the art *winces*... the other.. it's Psylocke! *whimpers* I don't know what to do!

And add me to the list that prefers Ninja Psylocke. I always found her far more interesting than the other.

What makes me laugh is from the interviews Matt Fraction seems to genuinely believe he's simplifying Betsy's backstory and making her more accessible for new readers with this story.

I know a lot of people love Matt Fraction's X-men run, but I just can't see, for the life of me, why.

Angelophile, are you sure any of the people who claim that Fraction's X-Men run is awesome have been reading the X-books for a considerable amount of time?Because if they have, then that would surprise me.

Anyway,I grew up loving the Japanese Psylocke with the British accent who was actually feeling comfortable living in the body of a ninja, since Betsy's dream was to have the skills and the resemblance of a warrior. And Fraction claims that he simplified her by turning her into the British chick who was in the shade of Storm and Dazzler?I know a lot of people who prefer the British Psylocke to the Asian one and the fact that Betsy herself prefers living in Kwannon's body should not discourage them, but, give me a break,by doing what Fraction did in the last issue(and what Joe Quesada also did in Brand-New-Day),you instantly retcon the 18-year-old story of a comic-book character(not to mention that you disrespect the fans of the Asian version).

Luckily for me,the covers of issues #510 and #512 feature Asian Betsy,so there is still hope...

Could an X-Man fan explain the Psylocke thing to me? I tried Wikipedia, which is normally concise and clear on comic book characters oddly, was confusing as heck on this subject.

Reading this issue totally confused me, especially since she's called "a prisoner", but appears to walk over without problem, and has the odd Technowitchblade outfit on.

I "prefer" asian betsy, but I dont know why she can't still be british betsy at the same time. A full amalgamation? I like her having her british past and family and such, but taking back the asian body and all the ninja skillz etc would just be a pointless regression. Forwards, my X-Men! Not backwards plz.

Looks like they're trying to show things from a mental perspective as well as the reality.

Asian Betsy would be so much better if she weren't a clone of Elektra. Get a new costume already!

Why must they taunt me with the return of British Betsy? Clearly they are using Revanche against her.

I'll just be happy to see Psylocke away from Claremont and written by Fraction.

I think the implication here is not that they're getting RID of the Asian Psylocke, it's that they're splitting her into two forms, British and Asian. Speaking personally, I like both Betsies, so I have no problem with this - hope they don't make it a 'war between the Psylockes' or something like that, though - that would suck.
Also, is that supposed to be Lady Deathstrike behind her there? Because if so, she's changed quite a bit since last I saw her - last I saw her, she was BALD, and wore that leather Samurai cap of hers in place of hair. I suppose she could be wearing a wig.
And while we're on the subject, can anyone tell me just what the hell the name 'Psylocke' is supposed to MEAN? Generally, X-Men names make sense - Cyclops wears a Cyclopean visor, Wolverine is beast-like, as is the Beast, Storm creates storms, Gambit messes around with playing cards, etc., etc. All those names make sense. But what the hell is a 'Psylocke'? I've been trying to figure out the logic behind the name for years now, and I keep coming up short.
