From what I understand, garnered from interviews and blogs like Living Between Wednesdays, Didio remains the editor-in-chief at DC because he aggressively controls and promotes the DC brand and marquee characters to its parent company and he runs his office like a vengeful tyrant, no one willing to to challenge him for fear of being blackballed. I think Waid was only able to make those comments because more than one writer/artist was caught in the lurch by this and public support and sales numbers ended against Didio's decisions.
