I actually enjoy the friendship between Betty and Veronica more than the dealing with Archie. There's an element of rivalry in it, and a status gap between them. (It doesn't seem to be emphasised as much, but originally Veronica was VERY wealthy and Betty was lower middle class.) We naturally take Betty's side because she's the sweeter and more altruistic of the two, but she's capable of some snark and pettiness herself. And while Veronica is spoiled and self-centered, she does have feelings and cares about her friends. These two are more rounded as characters than you might think.
