The Authority - Halloween Hijinks with the World's Finest Couple
I feel an urge to spread some Apollo/Midnighter love, so here's a few random pretties from various places, plus a snippet from The Breaks, which is one of the other stories in the Earth Inferno and other Stories TPB.

For anyone not familiar, Apollo and Midnighter are part of the Authority, a team of superheroes who strive for a finer world by tackling not only supervillians and alien threats, but also the injustices that humankind perpetrate on each other. The two were originally conceived as Superman and Batman equivalents, hence the resemblance, with the added wrinkle that they're a canon couple. They're now married, in a wedding that took the rhetoric of "could they be more gay?"and considered it a challenge, and have an adopted daughter, Jenny Quantum, who's the spirit of the 21st Century. I am more than a little charmed by the notion that the spirit of the 21st century is being raised by two dads. And here's living proof that Apollo is like the best dad ever:

They also let their daughter smoke and wear ugg boots, but let's not go there.

It's a constant surprise to me that there's not more focus in fanfic on aerial sexcapades.

So to briefly introduce our boys, for those not familiar. Flyboy there is Apollo, who has solar powered enhancements giving him superstrength, superspeed, and invulnerability. He can fly, survive in space, go diving in lava pits, and shoot lasers from his eyes. Jack Hawksmoor describes him as the "heavy artillery" of the team - he's basically invincible and nigh on untouchable. As long as you don't, like, shut him in a basement or anything. Then he'll fall on his ass.

His partner is the Midnighter, who has a computer in his head which can predict his opponent's movements in a fight. He's fond of creeping the shit out of people by telling them he's fought the fight in his head a million times before they've even thrown the first punch. His interests include killing people his bare hands, killing people with guns, killing people with construction tools, killing people with office supplies, wearing leather, Apollo, and, um, the Backstreet Boys.

Because it's one of my favourite moments ever - Unexpected blond Midnighter from Earth Inferno:

This is the first time in canon (barring a murky backview in his first Stormwatch appearance) we get to see Midnighter unmasked and out of costume, and it's a gleeful occasion, because he's just so damn dapper. Look at him! It's unfortunate that no subsequent colourists have ever seemed able to agree on his hair colour - he's been everything from ginger to black over the years, leaving fans to conclude that he must dye his hair on a regular basis. Which I really want to be true, because it's such a humanising note of frivolity for a character who can otherwise be a bit grim.

Anyway, on to The Breaks. First up, awesomely pretty cover art is awesomely pretty:

In this extract, Apollo and Mid get a visit from Amaze, one of their former Stormwatch teammates, who is suffering from a slight case of being dead, and is really sore she didn't get a wedding invite.

And yes, I did post that whole story just for the pay off in the final panel. It makes me go D'awwww, okay?

Occasionally, they do get to fight somebody who has something more original to say than "Hey, you guys are gay, did you notice?!" But not today.

Oh man I love the Authority, especially Apollo and Midnighter. One moment they will be all couple-y and cute with Jenny and the next Midnighter will pull out someone's spine. Literally.

I never got why Midnighter had his own series though. Obviously they should do a series of Midnighter AND Apollo being all badass.

The problem was that Garth Ennis pitched the series, and he hates Apollo. Ok, he hates most superheroes, but even Garth Ennis cannot deny the total badassery of Midnighter.

It's such an awesome shame, because the opportunity is wide open for someone to step up and give Apollo a personality, but no one seems to want to ):

About a year and a half ago an official Apollo book was given the greenlight (see this link: http://www.comicvine.com/apollo/29-2197/apollo-get-his-own-book/92-22622/). It was going to be written by Doug Wagner and illustrated by Cully Hamner (who actually did the art for the The Break posted above). I doubt it would have gone for 20 issues, ala the Midnighter series, but it probably would have gotten at least a 6 issue run like when Jack Hawksmoor got his own title.

Unfortunately, the book got canceled before work was started, which sucks something awful because 1. I love Cully Hamner's artwork and 2. I love Apollo and he tends to only function as the person who gets hurt so Midnighter will get properly riled up. He always shows a glimmer of being a fun character, and fandom has done loads of great things with him, but actual canon writers just seem lost in that regard.

Aw, that's a damn shame. I love Apollo too, he's my favourite. Not that I don't like Mindy, but you're right, he has the potential to be such fun, he has cool powers, great visuals - the man deserves a mini-series.

I love Apollo too, if only for the little bits of his personality that have managed to peak out in the comics.

My boyfriend once had this discussion with me and he said it's probably hard to write Apollo since he's basically just Superman, but I said no, he's Superman if Superman had enough pop culture knowledge to appear on one of VH1's many I Love the Blankity-Blank shows.

I've just always liked the idea that a man who can walk on the sun would spend his free time reading Vanity Fair and watching Friends.

I love Mindy too, though. I would totally buy a Midnighter/Apollo book. Doubt we'd be getting that anytime soon though.

I love the art he gets, the halos and the sunbursts. Plus it's nice to have a superhero who's not in crazy brooding mode all the time for the change. I'd love to find out he has a past as fucked up as Midnighter's probably is, but still manages to have a sunny personality. That's proper inner strength, that is.

And he's pretty. Oh so pretty.

Is that from Garth Ennis going on record, literally saying, "I hate Apollo"? Or is that just your conjecture?

I'm asking because there's a scene in one of the Kev books where Midnighter is facing off against a bunch of SAS guys and he's trying to plan out how they're going to defeat them and Apollo says, hey, wait a sec, do we really have to kick these guy's heads off? It's one of the best Apollo scenes that anyone (including Warren Ellis) has written, IMO.

Aw, Apollo and Midnighter! Their real superpower, of course, is being super-gay and ultra badass at the same time. Trufax.

(To be fair, they don't let Jenny smoke so much as they can't stop her, because she pulls those things out of thin air. I've always loved that bit in Revolution when Jenny abruptly goes from, like, six years old to about fourteen, and has just about managed to calm Apollo down when she casually lights up and freaks him out all over again. Hee.)

It just slays me when they're being parents. The fact that they're so snarky and Jenny is their boss just somehow makes it more adorable.

The latest comics have just been killing me with the d'aww, though. Angst! Balloons! Only being able to see each other for a minute at a time! It's heartbreaking, yet at the same time the writers handle it so well. *sniff*

My entire knowledge of that arc comes from the scans in the old comm - I'm waiting for the trade. Even just from that, though, I only have to hear the word "balloon" and I DIE.

...I have about a million A/M balloon moment icons on LJ and not a one here. I have not come prepared.

I keep meaning to get off my butt and do just that. The problem is I don't have quick access to a scanner and would have to use the one at school.

I've never had enough of an incentive to want to stick around and wait for the scanner to be free, but I suppose your firstborn would be adequate payment.

To be fair, he did challenge her over the smoking, but she generally told him to shut the fuck up and get real, as I recall. How would you argue against letting Jenny Quantum do what she wanted, anyway?

True, but when your parents are Apollo and the Midnighter, and they've imbued you with that particular kind of 'fuck you' attitude, and she could simply make them disappear, if she wanted, it's little wonder Apollo backs down fairly quickly.

*Nods* I can forgive it occasionally, because I'm sure homophobia would actually be kind of an issue for real gay superheroes, but writers really need to think outside the box at least some of the time.
