Power Cosmic Siphon Harness / Doom positioned behind Silver Surfer
So I was browsing Dr.Doom's article at Wikipedia (that's what it's good for!) when I came across this;

From when Doom built a Power Cosmic Siphon Harness from scratch in Fantastic Four #408

Say, remember the time that Doom and Magneto shared a toast over some villain stuff, and then Magneto collapsed because Doom dropped a roofie into his drink?

What kind of "probbing" was involved to find this awesome energy, Victor?

And did the procedure look something like this?

This is the balloon Doom gave the Surfer in apology afterward.

Not inflated. and Doom's laughter was, of course, mighty as he watched.

Utter badassery.

I held this single page up as a shining example of classic Doom to show in contrast just how much Julian McMahon's Dr. Doom failed.

If you are Victor MotherVonFucking DOOM and you have managed to steal of Power Cosmic from the goddamned Silver Surfer, herald to almighty GALACTUS, DEVOURER OF WORLDS... would the first thing out of your mouth be, "Nice!"? FUCK NO, SHITCAKES! LET THE KING AND STAN THE MAN SHOW YOU HOW SHIT'S DONE, LATVERIAN-STYLE!

I just can't get over the fact that they actually drew this, especially since, Silver Surfer is well, NAKED.

You're surprised? I guess you don't read many Silver Surfer comics, because he usually is!

...so that this really, really, looks like a raep scene...

From all the interviews and articles about him, I'd bet money that the idea of this being a possible rape scene never entered Jack Kirby's mind for a second.

Nor should it have. The Surfer wore "silver briefs" at the time due to the Comics Code, but by the late 80s they'd been eliminated because of the simple fact that the Silver Surfer is as anatomically male as a Ken doll. He has no nipples, no genitals, no anus, no reproductive or excretory systems at all, and has a purely energy-based metabolism. He's not human and is physically asexual.

Which is one primary reason he and Nova were such a perfect pairing, as she was as physically asexual as he was and yet both of them retained their once-biological instincts they could no longer act upon. They could form the basis for the pairbonding they needed psychologically without facing the incompatibility they would have to deal with in dating a partner for whom sex was still physically possible.

I miss that pairing. Damn Ron Marz for killing her off. :(

Kirby's original concept (before Stan messed it up, in my opinion) was that the Surfer had never been flesh and blood; he was an artificial construct made of energy from Galactus and his origin had him appearing from Galactus' outstretched hand. Stan went for the more obvious melodramatic breast-beating of Norrin Radd and Zenn-la and all that.

Lots of times, Stan's revisions made the characters more accessible (and more successful) but I really would have liked to see the Surfer as something alien learning about emotions from scratch. It would also have made him a bit menacing and unpredictable, rather than the golden-hearted martyr.
