This is from Superman's Girl Friend, Lois Lane #25. It's by Jerry Siegel and Kurt Schaffenberger.

"Protective devices." Is that that they're calling them now?

Out of context, that teaser panel of Lois with the black eye is reaaaally disturbing. :-O

Lois sounds at times like a robot programmed with recorded messages. "Place the newspaper in 'Compartment A'! Next, remove the coins in payment, from 'Slot B'!" "Please stop staring at me, and watch the comedy on the screen!"

I second your thoughts on that out of context panel. Also creepy: Superman going "Don't cry, Baby!" after pretty much ruining her life. Man, silver-age Lois is some damaged psychology.

I love how even Silver-Age Superman's security robot is a sanctimonious jerk, shouting "Crime does not pay! Crime does not pay!" without checking to see it's a criminal!

... And one little boy read these stories and said, "This is why superheroes can't get married!"

AND THAT LITTLE BOY WAS JOE QUESADA

AND NOW YOU KNOW THE REST OF THE STORY

Although, to be fair to Quesada, it looks like this story might have inspired Dave Sim, as well.

I mean, WTF??? Even when I was a little boy, I remember reading comics like this and thinking, "Um, do grown-up men really think that grown-up women act this way?"

And I was young, the question was "Do grown-up men really think that grown-up women look this way?" Which proves that comics have involved over the years.

Actually, I saw a little Steve Dillon in one panel.

(reads first panel)

She can get a divorce and a restraining order and go see Batman who'll give her a new identity and a Kryptonite ring, THAT'S what else she can do, you bulletproof bastard.

(reads rest of story)

...Still a viable option. And she should take out a restraining order on the entire writing staff of this issue while she's at it. None of them are allowed to get within a hundred feet of a script featuring her.

Yes that would be the sane thing to do, but somehow superman will get her back.

While I generally have a low opinion of Silver Age Lois, she's actually pretty sympathetic here. I mean, it's basically her vanity that gets her into this pickle in the first place, but at least she has the grace to admit that their marriage should have stayed anonymous. And in the meantime, she gets beaten up, shot at, humiliated - it's a little difficult NOT to sympathize with someone when they're going through hell like that.
I will say one thing, though - that bubble-car is simultaneously brilliant and moronic. Brilliant because, well, it WORKS, moronic because for cryin' out loud, couldn't Supes come up with something better than that? A personal force field, maybe - at any rate, something invisible that wouldn't make his wife look like a fool. (Although, for the record, I actually think it looks kinda nifty - I wouldn't mind one of those.)

Two questions: one, just how long did Jerry Siegel work for DC? Second, did Jerry Siegel really fucking hate women, or is it just me that thinks that?

And this is so ridiculous. Why is she suddenly at more risk because they're married, as everyone knows her as his girlfriend in any event? She was always endangered just because of that.

How much you wanna bet that JFK tipped Supes a wink and gave him Marilyn Monroe's number?
