Note: Please don't add the 'joker' tag, to keep the surprise.

Unconscious or not, the Joker looks far too happy in that position.

This was the story they tacked on to fill out the recently-published trade collection of "Going Sane," one of my favourite Joker story arcs.

for those of you who are wondering, batman does actually have a pretty legitimate reason to save Joker here
I can't remember what it was exactly, but Joker had planted a bomb / gas tank / something destructive and deadly and batman needs to find out where it is from joker

Bombs usually don't wait until you solve the mystery and though there is method to Joker's madness, it's usually only apparent after everyone's dead.

So yeah, saving Joker sucks but better that than innocent explodey.

Still, there is a reason most heroes don't go up to the villain and ask them where the bomb is.

With the Joker though, you KNOW he's going to gloat as much as he can to Batman... and as long as he's babbling he'll let some sort of clue slip.

I DIDN'T EVEN NOTICE THAT! D8 Was he in some sort of horrific accident, prior to donning his costume for this issue, I wonder.

I wish someone would just kill the Joker, he's gone too far too many times and he's really getting stale lately with Morison's Joker and the hundreds he's murdered. Start highlighting the lesser known villains like Clayface, Mad Hatter and give Mr Freeze a flipping good story, he's a goldmine of storytelling!

Honestly, I wish they'd come up with a reason to keep Joker alive so that we didn't have to resort to the shallow 'All life is worth saving' clap trap. Fear of copy cats, maybe.

That's a good reason, actually.

There was an arc around 1990 or so (it might've been during "A Lonely Place of Dying," I don't remember) where the Joker, presumed dead, is in fact keeping out of the public eye, not to avoid getting caught, but because he isn't sure he can be the Joker anymore. He's "forgotten the joke" (*groan*). Meanwhile, some other disturbed guy decides it's his destiny to become the next Joker and starts dressing up and committing crimes accordingly. His mistake comes when he tries to finish the job by immersing himself in toxic waste...

The story where the Joker realises he doesn't get the joke anymore is really rather awesome IMHO.

He sits in his hideout, recuperating, stone cold non-manic, watching the news reports of the faux Joker's crimes and realises that he's just not finding them funny, and they are actually rather baffling to him; His plaintive "That's not humour... that's irony" is almost pitiful.

Must see if I can dig that one out.

I still like Tony Isabella's idea of having the Joker be killed... by the REAL Joker.

We find out that the mass murdering nutjob was some schlub the Joker drove nuts years ago, to distract Batman for a little while whilst the real Joker was up to something (Or else the faux Joker turned the tables and took him hostage). And the REAL Joker is not at all pleased with the outcome of his substitutes extended antics.

"You had a chance to kill Robin... and you used a CROWBAR? And then you had the unmitigated GALL to COVER IT UP?? I don't mind murder, I'm actually pretty good at it if I say so myself, but there's such a thing as... oh I don't know; "STYLE", "flair", "elan"! Murder is easy, any idiot with a butterknife can KILL. But destroying lives, and leaving the victim alive so you can enjoy the suffering, now THAT requires finesse! THAT'S funny!"

That would only be a short term solution. Editors wouldn't reign in writers and eventually, we'd have the same problem.

There ought to be a logical concern, IMO, to keeping Joker alive. Coppy cat, possible virus release if he died, somethin' to explain why someone doesn't just kill him.

possible virus release if he died

Or some sort of psychic trigger in his brain that, upon his death, causes psychotic episodes, or permanent insanity, in anyone within a certain radius. Yes, Moore already did that in Watchmen, but a good writer could put a new twist on it. (Hey, the "faking an alien invasion to save the world" bit wasn't original to Watchmen either; an EC Weird Science story and an Outer Limits episode both used that motif in their own way.)

Marvel did the "virus release if he dies" bit with Baron Von Strucker, IIRC.

It seems odd that the only "real" reason Batman won't kill the Joker or let him die is so he won't feel like a hypocrite. Which is a lot better than this "Cross that line there's no coming back" crap he's given us since the 1980s.

KINGDOM COME seems to say that if anyone ever killed the Joker the other heroes would start killing everyone like crazy... which the Joker would find funny.
