It refers to the Roman author Pliny the Elder (or Gaius Plinius Secundus) who wrote a book of Natural History that referenced all sorts of critters.

Ah! I could only think of him, but of his work I could only think of the writings on geography - Vesuvius and whatnot, and I'd never have made the link between his strange descriptions of critters and this alien.
