I hate to jump on people for faulty code within minutes of the post appearing, but not sure if it's commonly known that the lj-cut tag works here too. Apparently Insanejournal aren't bothered that it's obvious they stripped the code from LJ. Wonder if that openminded policy applies to journal content too.

FWIW, it's not really "stripped" LJ is open source (http://www.livejournal.com/code/). About their policies, I have no idea, but the code is freely available.

Uhm, check out http://www.insanejournal.com/

In the first section there are a couple relevant bullet points:

* [...] It is built on open source software from Danga Interactive.

* At InsaneJournal we believe in freedom of expression. We will not censor content unless it obviously violates United States law and we receive an offical takedown notice. We do not self-police the site.

The second bullet point, in particular (emphasis in it is mine), is hugely different from LiveJournal, which is becoming an anagram in my head (EvilJournal!)

I liked this story and only recently got the last issue I didn't have (JLA 195). Yay Floronic Man and yay Perez.

Gerry Conway is about to make his return to comics with the Death of Animal Man mini. I wonder how his comic writing will hold up to the 2000s.

Brainwave: Raping people before Dr. Light. And in the silver age even! (or was this bronze age?)

And as for the comment of stopping the Humanite from taking the floor of the UN, I am reminded of a joke:

"where does a 500 pound albino gorilla with the brain of an evil genius make demands?"

"anywhere he wants."

You know, I can't help but think that if you're going to introduce rape into a storyline (which, yes, realistically would be what would happen if a gang of ruthless criminals took over the world), I can't help but think it shouldn't be in the same panel as hokey dialogue like "No one can stop Brainwave now!"

It's been a while, but I seem to recall that with Alias, Bendis made the violation the point of the story. It really couldn't have been done any other way without radically altering the plot.

Here, it's "Monocle beats up cops with laser eyepiece," "Psycho-Pirate steals shit with his buddy the human fart," "RAPE!", "giant albino gorilla takes over the UN."

I don't really see the point of it. Were they afraid someone would read this and go "Hey, this is bullshit, someone should be getting raped!"?

I might think the "point" is to show what different Villains want out of their evilness. Some want Money, some want Power ,so want sex with women. Telepaths and empaths have a nasty habit of falling into the last catagory. from Matermind,The purplemand to Brianchild.

I suppose it's a natural progression from mindfuck to something more literal.

well most of these characters began life as introverts, then their powers kicked in and they just couldn't say no to themselves.

It's the usual thing too of the Earth-2 characters being a bit more "primal." In the same way as their Superman was simpler and tougher, their villains were VERY nasty and pretty basic about their drives. Some have a misperception that Earth-2 was more innocent. Oh fuck no. That was pre-Code--it's Silver age they're thinking of. These guys were bad news.

I mean, the U-H has to murder people and animals just to live, for one.

Point is, Brainwave's behavior here is totally in keeping with his character and makes sense in context. And is fucking evil.
