Hal, Barry and the Manly Camping Trip
I thought that it couldn't hurt to post this story again. There was some discussion going on about good Barry Allen stories and I figured this fit the bill.

Scans are from Mark Waid's 'Flash & Green Lantern; The Brave and the Bold,' available through most online retailers! Get your copy today!

So Jay, Alan, Barry and Hal decide to take a trip off planet to do some serious bonding. On the way 'something' interferes with Hal's ring and he can no longer find directions to the planet he had picked out. Instead Alan finds them a nice little planet they can camp and do manly things on. Unfortunately Alan is being a bit of a dick about it and giving Hal a hard time.

I love Hal's expression/s in those panels. 'Hal Jordan: Greatest Green Lantern. Bored to death by small talk.'

Anyway, unpleasant yellow rain suddenly pours down upon them and Hal is useless. For the second time on this trip. His humiliation and discomfort continues when Barry finds a stuffed bear among Hal's things and Hal is forced to admit that he has recently become a traveling toy salesmen. Once again, Alan gives him a hard time about it. Eventually the quartet decide they should just head straight to be bed.

And that's how I fell in love with Barry. Isn't he adorkable? Who goes on a manly camping trip with three other guys and brings his striped pjs, toothbrush, housecoat and a picture of his wife? ♥

He just wanted an excuse to hold your hand, Hal. Way to be useless again, by the way!

Eventually they're attacked by a swarm of insects. Made entirely out of wood. They merge into one big bug which attacks Alan. Then Alan smashes it apart, claiming that the bug is actually a creation of Hal's.

Now why would Hal create a giant wooden bug monster to attack Alan?

And believe it or not, the answer is not 'because he's a freaking moron.'

ETA: Sorry if that seemed a little disjointed, I had to really cut back on this entry when I realized (dur) that it didn't fit within the new posting guidelines.

This is my first time posting here, so apologies if I've majorly screwed anything up.

The posting was fine so no problems there. The story bugs the hell out of me.

Alan Scott being a sanctimonious prig does not impress. Who the hell does he think he is being that judgemental? I'm not a huge Hal fan, but even I wanted to see him punch the smug guys lights out.

Yeah, the characterization of secondary characters is a bit of an issue with this series. Alan is pretty bad, and in the Green Arrow story Ollie is even more of a shrill caricature than usual. It's one of the major flaws of an otherwise enjoyable miniseries (I am a big fan of the art and Barry's characterization in particular).

Thing about the Barry characterisation is that it's really a Barry that never quite existed. This is the post-Crisis retcon Barry, who was a lot more laid back than his actual pre-Crisis self.

I don't see how that's a problem. I never said that this is the way Barry was/is/and should always be characterized, only that this is my favourite way he has been written. There are very few characters who have the same personality in every interpretation, so if we are able to pick and choose then I choose this one.

Yay! Too bad Waid couldn't write Rebirth...

Love seeing so much of Barry in costume with his cowl down.

Thanks for putting these up again!

I wish Alan Scott would get his own book. It would take place in he 30's kinda like sandman Mystery theater. I don't believe he works well with the other GL's.

When did the whole "Hal does a lot of wandering" thing start? I know GL: REBIRTH had it as at least partially Parallax affecting him, but what was the original idea?

It reflects the Pre-Crisis Hal who quit working for Ferris in the late 1960's when Carol got engaged tp someone else, and he did wander around doing jobs like "travelling salesman" and "insurance adjuster"

That was a cover story! The bear was Hal's beloved Mr. Pooh.

That WAS a horrible spot to pitch the tent, Alan. Hal and Barry were still in the room!
