Teen Titans #69
Hey, so, you know how Titans has been a total cesspool of misery, "shock value" death and maulings, ZOMG LOOK HOW EDGY posturing and general filthy, angsty wallowing? But in the last couple issues, it's been kind of picking up a bit, and starting to look like a title that might actually be worth following?

Well, the relief from gory murder didn't last long...

... but the dead guy is Face, who spent the entire issue repeatedly sexually harrassing every girl within leering distance until Aquagirl laid a massive smackdown on him and Cassie kicked him out of the tower. So, hey, the title has turned around! First good comic book death in years!

Ohhh face guy really does creep me out.

Hey, is Misfit still appearing in this book?

No, she's not on the roster.

Which opens up a whole array, incidentally, of decent ways for her to be written out of Barbara's life without making Babs seem like a more abominable excuse for a mentor than Oliver Bleeding Queen. Top of my musing list at the moment is "sent her to find Sin, investigate her situation and look out for her" - Misfit bouncing into the monastery is about the lowest-profile investigation humanly possible, no way the LoA is going to pick up on that, so Babs is getting the answers she needs and can't get from Dinah without putting Sin in any danger. Charlie then sticks around for a few months driving the monks insane just to make sure everything is kosher and it's a good place for Sin before coming home to give her report, at which point all the Battle bullshit will be over and some other writer has to deal with it.

Except that she's on the wall with "The Network". That would definitely be a neat idea, though. Hopefully if Dinah's getting her own stories now, the Sin situation will be addressed.

If Misfit was on the TT roster, that might just be enough to get me to buy the stinking book. As such, bleh.

If rosters alone determined the quality of this book, I'd be all over it. Like, half my favorite characters are in it or guest star semi-regularly. But the art and the stories? Actually really suck. Personally, I'm looking forward to the Wednesday comics thing.

I dunno, in ORACLE he threatened to kill a doctor for badmouthing the Titans. Of course banking on cross-title continuity isn't a wise play at this point, so he's prolly as likely as anything else.

The only reason I kept reading Teen Titans was because I missed Young Justice so much. But I swear all this series does is make me feel faintly suicidal and weep for them to bring back PAD and Young Justice. That series had better depth, characterization, humour and meaning than any other DC title I've read. Also, back then, Impulse was hilarious, Superboy was cocky and hot, he and Cassie actually worked as a couple and Robin was cocky and adorable and they were all so squishy...as opposed to being a bunch of emotionally scarred, emo, wangsty jerks (Good God, they actually managed to turn Impulse into an emo jerk!).

Dammit, I want to post Young Justice scans! *is a sad panda*

Hey, does anyone have any idea what happened to Empress after YJ?

[info]warpedhand

It would be so easy to make an awesome new YJ too!

Just have M'Gann as the muscle/team coordinator
Jaime and Traci as the tech and magic

Everyone else is superfluous. Although they need an arc where M'Gann realizes that if she can be anyone, and know basically anything useful, why would she stay in high school? Normal Life? Fuck that!

Charlie could be the martial arts/connection to Oracle.

I think that collectively, they'd make a good detective team as well.

Charlie's mostly the Bart, actually, I'd say. Gets places fast, is a very effective advance scout, has a fighting style that's almost entirely dependent on her power, and is a playful goof who's very bad at taking instruction.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]warpedhand
2009-04-01 11:43 pm UTC (link)
The only problem with the team is that there is no real leader, per se. Jaime's too new (or too modest), Traci doesn't seem to get at the forefront very much (although I think I could see her taking the leader role) M'gann is the coordinator rather than the leader, and Charlie... well, let's just say she's still in training. She'd probably be an effective leader if Dinah was able to train her enough, although she is definitely more effective on point.

To quote Cissie: "That's it? Cass, that's totally lame. You got the muscle, the comic relief, the utility player and the chick, but no one dark and mysterious. Every group has someone dark and mysterious. They provide the angst."

I always wondered whether "dark and mysterious" was supposed to be Robin or Secret.

(Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

[info]bluefall

Secret. Tim wasn't really that angsty - he had a baseline level about his secret identity issues, but it was baseline, same as Cassie and Cissie's fights with their moms and Kon's "I wanna be a real boy" stuff. Secret was a solid ball of ZOMG misery and unspoken woe and dark and terrible burdens to horrific to even fucking talk about for fifty bloody issues.

(Sorry. Loved YJ. Hated the Secret arc.)

Which one? YJ began and ended with Secret storylines. One could argue that the Secret's story was the over-reaching arc of the entire series.

I'd actually say Jaime's modesty is the reason he should be leader. He'd be the kind who leads by example and encourages the team. I'd love for there to be a leader vote, and he gets completely blindsided and goes "Huh? Me? Really?"

I mean, the boy did singlehandedly fight off an alien invasion! He's got a lot more experience than he gets credit for.

He didn't fight it off single handedly. THat's what really was so awesome about it. He fought it off with the help of his family, his friends, the local gang, the local crime boss, four Justice League rejects, a superhero washout, and one of his predecessors' granddaughter.

We're talking something that's normally full scale Justice League but Jaime pulled it off with those guys.

Well, yeah, but he was the only superhero involved for most of it. The former JLIers didn't come in till the end. It was mostly him and his friends and family.

He actually showed some fantastic leadership skills during that whole thing.

Empress had a few cameos after YJ. She was in one panel in Shadowpact and was miscolored white, she guest-starred in the Wonder Girl mini (along with Arrowette!) where they got back in costume, and Anita and Sparks got their butts kicked by Dr. Light and some other villain when all the villains returned to Earth after Salvation Run and were staging their "protest." As far as I know.

Well, it didn't help that Torres didn't seem terribly concerned with characterization. I mean, for the most part it probably would have been okay if the burden of all that nonsense was off it, but I still can't get over Cissie in uniform. Just go ahead and demolish Cissie's entire storyarc and kill half the point of the Cissie-Cassie friendship in one casual stroke, why don't you.

I'd say bring back Young Justice but with a different writer. PAD was just a little too enamored with bad puns and other corny jokes.

On the other hand, Todd Nauck doing YJ again would be beyond awesome.

Or better yet, just retool Teen Titans so its members actually act like teenagers instead of Image Comics Gen 13 wannabes.

I'm guessing the real truth behind this plotline, to be revealed at some later date, is that it's actually Arnim Zola who offed The Face. "I'm sorry, but I cannot have some Amerikaner fool stealing my gimmick, so he must die painfully."
