It's Ennis-Time!
Greetings True Believers! I bring you scans from Crossed #4. A charming little series that Garth Ennis is doing for Avatar. Some of you may remember me posting about it in -SD-That-Was. The point of this post is that beyond his work in Punisher, I can't take Ennis seriously anymore. You'll see why. BTW, Crossed is a world beset by "28 days later" style lunatics with an Ennis touch. Spoilers and NSFW!

So yeah. Does anyone take Ennis seriously anymore?

I think that anyone who takes Ennis seriously (when he's writing these sorts of books) is the one who has a problem.

It's stuff like this that almost makes me think the Comic Book Defence Fund should have a "comics we won't defend" clause.

That is not art. It is not entertainment. It is not high-faluting "expression." It is pure obscenity that gives the medium a bad name and if I were a comic shop owner I would neither carry it nor special-order it.

(And I speak as someone who not only has plenty of NSFW matter in his collection but also owns and loves Preacher, his run on Hellblazer and and other works Ennis created before he apparently decided he hated comics and their readers.)

With a cut out for his balls! Classy!

I know I'm jaded because the internet has taught me that's not what a horse cock looks like.

Yeah horse cocks are much larger. Furries and Mr. Hands thought me this.

I don't think it's a cut out...I think they're just falling out of the mouth.

... WHY DID I GIVE THIS EVEN A MOMENT'S THOUGHT?!

If I didn't love Preacher so much, that one panel of the old man with the dead face bikini would be enough to turn me off of Ennis forever. Every time I make the mistake of reading Crossed scans, I feel like vomiting. I need to trust my instincts and bypass the Crossed entries!

The thing that gets me is, while I detest the obnoxious!Ennis of THE BOYS, WORMWOOD, and MARVEL KNIGHTS PUNISHER, I deeply adore serious!Ennis of WAR STORIES, ENEMY ACE: WAR IN HEAVEN, and PUNISHER MAX (PREACHER and HITMAN walked the line but pulled it off because they generally erred for the latter over the former).

When Ennis first announced the concept for CROSSED, I have to admit, I got chills. I found it deeply disturbing and rich with horrific potential, especially since he said in interviews that it would be totally devoid of humor, which I took to mean devoid of obnoxiousness. But for the first time, it's like he's managed to do the obnoxiousness in a non-comedic fashion, and the result is even more...

... shit, it's barely even offensive at this point. It's just... really? Sighh. What a waste of potential.

Ennis was born to write Punisher and it needs to be in MAX so he can express himself. His work on The Boys/Wormwood/Crossed could seem like venting against the industry/his fans/comic book heroes/....whatever. But another view could be that he's run out of things to say and he's venting a lot of self-rage.

(Also I'm half-convinced he's letting off steam from being in the closet all his life. His works contain a lot of homosexual imagery and themes/violent sexual imagery/hateful female characters.)

I dunno, I think Hitman was weakest when it was being entirely serious. It worked as a funny, somewhat over-the-top comic with just enough seriousness to add bite.

The test of one's conviction of support for free speech is not in the cases when you like the work but more when you don't. Does that make sense? Its late.

Yeah, I get what you're saying there, and I think this is a good example of that kinda work. Should it be reprehensible? Sure! Illegal, never.
It's the whole "I don't agree with what you're saying, but I defend to death your right to say it" thing

Probably:
"You know with all this rape and bloodshed the readers might be getting desensitised."
-"Then we've got not choice."
"We've got to kill some children."
-"It's the right choice, the hard choice."
"Not really, they'll be sleeping"
-"The moral choice."
"Don't milk it, mate."

o_O *gags* This does not deserve to be published. It is neither art nor entertainment, and I see absolutely no redeeming features in it. Must remember freedom of speech... but that doesn't mean that this should have been published, only that he has the legal freedom to write/draw it. *shudders*

Sigh... yeeeeeeah. Ennis has written some of the most fascinating comics in my collection (his contribution to Spider Man: Tangled Web still gives me chills) and also comics that you couldn't pay me to read. But then, on some level I feel the same about Loeb and even to a point Miller-- I think when a comic writer gets to a certain level of percieved demi-Godness there is a temptation to say, "I can do whatever I want now!" and put out batshit terrible craziness

His story in S:TW is great, so are huge portions of his work. I think he needs a tighter leash from the editors. He's such a talented writer but he's run out of things to say. He keeps harping on a few points/issues and doesn't seem to want to try out anything new.
