Most people as far as I'm aware use the word in a very broad "cosmic irony" sense and we understand each other perfectly.
And most people on the Internet don't know or care about the difference between "there," "their" and "they're." That does not make their communication valid when they use the wrong one, any more than it does when they type "rouge" when they mean "rogue." It is OBJECTIVELY WRONG, and therefore INHERENTLY INVALID.
If someone uses such a simple word incorrectly, EVEN THOUGH THEY KNOW BETTER, I may understand what they're trying to say, but I'm still going to consider them to be slack-jawed dumbasses, and I'm going to automatically discount the worth of anything that they say as a result. This is not a mere typo, or misplaced punctuation, or accidentally using one word when you mean another. This is PURPOSEFULLY using THE WRONG GODDAMN WORD. YOU DON'T GET TO DO THAT AND STILL BE GIVEN ANY SHRED OF CREDIBILITY WHATSOEVER. This is using language the way that HUMPTY-DUMPTY does in Alice in Wonderland, which, in a world in which people are already far too misleading with their language as it is (see also: all political and advertising communication ever) is flatly EVIL.
