Well, since we're not living in the land of Lewis Carroll, if a songwriter writes a song in English, and that's their native language, and they deliberately use a word COMPLETELY FUCKING INCORRECTLY over and over and over and over and over again, then I say they deserve every last bit of shit that they get from everyone for doing so. "Ironic" was not just one verse of the song - IT WAS THE TITLE AND THE ENTIRE POINT OF THE FUCKING SONG.. At the risk of making a Godwin-level comparison, if I wrote a song in which I used the word "rape" to mean "sex," over and over and over again, then I would have ZERO right to complain when everyone said WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU??? You do not get to arbitrarily redefine words that have a nearly-universally agreed-upon definition among 99 percent of all semi-literate people, and if you seriously can't comprehend that, then never mind SONGWRITING, because you fail simply for BASIC HUMAN COMMUNICATION.
