Magog #3

More intrigue with the Sunderland Corporation and Flashpoint company...

The villain is Mark Sunderland, a man who made billions through Ponzi schemes before getting busted by Lois Lane. Afterwards, he purchased mind-controlling airborne nanites from Flashpoint, a company that deals in illegal wonder-tech. He hoped to use the technology to wipe away his crimes, but it was experimental and there were side effects; now he has to wear that gas mask all the time.

After some ranting, he orders Magog to stop breathing.

Some more ranting later, and Sunderland goes one further and orders Magog to die. And Magog does... for a while.

Sunderland's been attacking Flashpoint as vengeance for selling him defective technology. Flashpoint's decided to strike back.

Their Customer Relations dept. in action:

Sunderland Corporation? Where does this leave Connie Sunderland (last seen in Un-Men)? How many kids did General Sunderland have, anyway?

This is interesting, but the artwork is distracting me. I mean, it's good enough artwork, but there's one little detail that keeps springing out at me - Magog's horns. They're kinda, well... stubby. They're gestural horns. They're not fully developed horns. Compare them to the full-fledged curly ram's horns that he has in Kingdom Come, and you really start wondering if this is the same guy.

I don't think it is.

Ah - well, maybe that explains it. Perhaps his horns have some growing to do.

I know that they say that there's no such thing as a bad character, but I've not seen one take on Magog that has made me care about this character and/or stopped me from just rooting for the supposed villains.

I wish they'd just turn him into a villian already so I can root for whoever kicks his ass.

I agree that I don't like the character or most of the writing, but there were bits above (like him letting them bash each other) that I kinda liked.

As far as I'm concerned, he already proved he could with the latest Blue Beetle series.

I missed it. Maybe I should check it out.

I mostly remember the 90s. :(

Avoid it. The dialogue was fine, but the stories were pretty bad, and Jaime Reyes (the new Blue Beetle) never rose above being a bland, generic teen hero. Think Poochie from the Simpsons.

You'll note that the person who told you to avoid Blue Beetle was called "Superboyprime". Blue Beetle was one of the best superhero comics, simply put, although that was mostly thanks to John Rogers.

Sunderland looks like the Scarecrow from the Batman Arkham Asylum game.

Yeah, Magog's a real genius there, not listening to the villain's rant. They try so hard to depict the character as a professional, so what would he need intel for?

Magog is smart, but he's not one for using "Shut up, Hannibal" or "And then what?" against a bad guy. He's more of a "Where do I hit them?" and "How hard?" when it comes it intel.

I'm imagining the conversation he has on a cellphone while wearing that helmet. "Think you could dig something up for me?"
--
"What?"
--
"You'll have to speak up."
--
"No the signal is good, but I got this..."
--
"What?"
--
"No I got this helmet thing on..."
--
"Come again?"

The horns vary wildly from scene to scene, it drives me batty for some reason. I forget what preview I read last week, but in it his horns ran a good foot out to the side and arced down to land on his shoulder.

In general I would say his specs (artwork) are all over the map. Including the anatomy. I was catching up on my "Spiderwoman agent of sword" and I noticed that Spiderwoman's accent was just as wild all over the place , from low-end southern to posh Londoner...

Wasn't Sunderland Corporation one of the big bads of Swamp Thing back in the early 90's?
