Yes, exactly! The whole "gay" thing would be totally foreign to someone from Achilles's background. Homosexuality/Bisexuality was fairly common among the elite Greeks of Achilles time. There was no stigma attached (look at Socrates or the other philosophers who slept with boys and also had wives) and they didn't think of it as an orientation or whatever, it was just the way it was and it was accepted. Our own current concepts of sexuality and the compartments we place people in would be mystifying to someone like Achilles. So when Gail says "he's gay" I hope that's just shorthand for her so readers get it - its certainly something Achilles would refer to himself as.
