I don't get that from Ellis at all, particularly after reading Crooked Little Vein. He writes whatever pays the bills, from columns to video games to comic books to animated features.
What seems to have happened, just from reading his "Bad Signal" mailing list, is that Ellis was one of the people who got screwed over by the '90s editorial at Marvel. When Quesada took over, Ellis was one of the people who Quesada successfully made amends to, so Ellis has written a number of books for the new Marvel... none of which are straightforward superheroic stories. Really, every single thing Ellis has written for Marvel in the last few years is transhumanist science fiction with a superhero tinge.
