JLA #28: Grant Morrison and the Gang
JLA #28, the first part of "Crisis Times Five" was a Grant Morrison JLA/JSA story that also (briefly) featured a few foes of the Pre-Crisis Supergirl.

First, a Who's Who entry for Matrix Prime:

The Gang and the robot Matrix Prime were villains in the SUPERGIRL series of the early 1980s. The DCU Guide for this issue speculates that Kong, Bulldozer and Matrix Prime (with Brains' mind) are now Power Girl villains.

Matrix Prime/Brains looks less gray. Maybe she wanted a somewhat more feminine robot body.

Torment a former superhero? What could possibly go wrong?

Triumph originally appeared in the Justice League America "Zero Hour" issue.

"Too many vowels."

Grant Morrison. Even ten years ago, he was crackalicious. Whether he was eating magic mushrooms to get story ideas even then, I don't know.

Let's not even go into the whole Triumph deal it honestly really does depress me. He was an awesome character that was turned to shit pretty fast.

I never understood what Priest was thinking when he wrote Triumph. He seemed proud of how he made the guy an ass and so loathed at DC, but really, is making a character hated difficult for any writer?

Didn't he also claim he wrote him with the intention to make him gay?

Maybe. I vaguely recall something about Triumph and homosexuality, but beyond that I dunno.

Priest has confirmed on his site that he wanted Triumph to be hated by all the other characters for "always being right" - which is an excellent formula for ensuring that all the READERS will hate him as well, since strangely enough, a lot of readers really aren't going to like a character whose core concept is "all the other established characters job for him, so that both the character and the writer can rub our noses in how much better the new character is" - and then, after deciding that he would make him hated, he decided to make him gay as well (also confirmed on the site), and certainly, there isn't anything problematic about THAT.

There's a reason why Priest will refund the money, on the spot, of anyone who walks up to him and says that they paid for his Triumph mini. When Priest is good, we get Black Panther and Quantum & Woody. When he's bad, we get Triumph and his utterly WTF story for Wonder Woman.

Yeah, personally I hope someone in the future resurrects Triumph and redeems him, or at least, attempts to. He really did get the short end of the stick, story-telling wise.

But this story was Captain Marvel heavy, so that's why I liked it.

There is an easy way to do that involves Moon Maiden, Zauriel, and the Spectre.

They should have used Moon Maiden more.

Absolutely agreed. And nobody's really using Zauriel for much (I'd actually like to hear his opinion on the whole Blackest Night thing, but I'm scared Johns will kill him, so maybe it's best he stays away?) at the moment.

I'd much prefer to hear his opinion on the whole "war in heaven; Darkseid won" thing.

Damn you morisson. I was hoping Sterling could bring the gang back, especially Brains. Have I mentioned how much retconning Supergirl sucked recently?

Thinking about it though, they brought Reactron and Blackstarr back from the suicide squad (although why they changed her name to myra is beyond me) so regaining Brains shouldn't be too much. Its never said she was a PG villain in this continuity so pretend the daring adventures never happened, ultra-humantite her brain into a blonde and hey presto we are back in business.

That golden helmet looks familiar. Does it belong to a DC character or is it a reference to the Kree from Marvel?

I wanna say it belongs to the Ray.

It doesn't have a bust! A pleasant surprise.

Thank you. I remember reading this story and wondering who that robot was supposed to be.

Huh, Supergirl villains. I would never have guessed.
