Seriously. I sometimes think that someone at DC has it in for the Marvels, despite the fact so many of the writers there claim to love them (for example, Winnick, Johns, Simone, and Morrison claim to be fans of the characters) yet the Marvels are constantly either jobbing to weaker characters, pushed down and made ridiculous to make new characters look good, made fun of for their old-fashioned morals or naivete or just changed entirely until they are unrecognizable. I mean really, who thought an Evil Mary Marvel was a good idea (not to mention the bad art and bad writing that went with it)? Who really thinks a crazed and souped up on New God power+Black Adam power doesn't defeat Supergirl handily in FC (instead of the other way around)? Who thought making Billy (the heart of the franchise) into a white-haired guy who never left the cave and did nothing was a good idea? Who thought making Freddy into the main character, complete with the red suit as if Freddy and Billy were the same guy and interchangeable (yes I know Winnick) was a change for the better?
These are supposed to be kids with the powers of the Gods themselves, as strong as or more powerful than Superman and Wonder Woman. Kids who actually liked being super-heroes. Kids who (formally) didn't have a lot of angst and "drama". How hard is it to come up with good stories - fun stories - for them? IMO, Marvel's The Incredible Hercules is one of the most fun and entertaining books on the market. Why can't DC do that with the Marvels?
Physical proof DC doesn't do even know what it's doing with the Marvels is in this very solicit. It calls Freddy the new "Captain Marvel" and yet when Didio announced this at Newsarama in his 10 questions thing he called Freddy "Shazam". Which is it, DC? Robinson even made fun of the changing names in the horrid "Cry for Justice". If the editors themselves don't even know what the character is called - what's the point any more?
