Truth is, nobody really knows why he became Monarch again during the previous crisis...ses.

I don't think any of the writers even did, either.

Well now they can explain the Monarch (again) thing away as one of Sam Lane's dastardly plans.

While I do like this look, I like the old look, too. Is there a word for not having a preference?

Nah, I don't like that term.

What do you mean when you say "old Captain Atom"? Do you mean the pre-Crisis version? The Bates/Weisman version? Or the not-a-mass-murderer-for-no-reason-whatsoever version?

What I can't figure out is this: how did Rucka and Robinson remember Cap's resistance to magic, but forget that his last name is Adam, not Allen? Or have they decided to retcon the character's name?

The third one. The super hero that is flawed, but still a hero.

That's every version prior to Arena. And while I certainly agree with you wholeheartedly, I also don't want them to lose sight of the things about the Bates/Weisman version that made the character uniquely interesting.

So where is this set? Is it in Skartaris?

I don't believe it's Skartaris. I think it's some new 'magic world' that they've invented for the Superman titles. If I follow the plot so far, what's happening is that General Sam Lane, in his crusade to wipe out all of the Kryptonians, has made a deal with an evil Witch Queen from this magic world...in return for the use of Captain Atom as an anti-magic WMD.

Huh. That's weird. You'd think, given that DC has a genuine swords-and-sorcery setup easily at hand, they'd take advantage of it a bit more.

I wonder what writer thought "Hey, we've got a conflict spearheaded by General Lane, General Zod, Lex Luthor, Superman, Brainiac plus a few dozen B-listers. You know what we need? A completely new magical realm that we have to introduce, flesh out and develop before everything comes to a boil!"

...how do Superman readers and writers keep track of things without a score card?

These are superhero comics. Readers are the score cards.

Hey, the captain now has blue boots instead of red ones! Now he looks slightly less like someone who's naked except for his socks (and gloves)!

He's always had blue boots, at least the post-Crisis version of the character.

I only really know him from the JLU cartoons. And I distinctly remember him in his red socks there ;)

That was a radically different version of the character than the one from the comics. Truth be known, the JLU version seemed, to me at least, more like the LoSH character Wildfire than like the comic-book version of Captain Atom.

Natasha was on assignment? Never saw that coming.

This second feature of Cpt Atom makes a bit more sense than the first one at least. I was left scratching my head after that one.

Is the USA army the biggest jerks in comics, or has there been other countries who were bigger?
