TBH, the Giving/Taking riddle pretty much just sounds like parenthood. A kid is a wonderful blessing... who eats up all your time and resources. A kid is a piece of you who the world gets to take away and do what it likes with... but who's also a source of joy and pride and reward. This would be a particularly stark contradiction for Arthur, who seems to have resented Steph a great deal even before she became Spoiler, and probably doesn't even know how to have a healthy appreciative human relationship, but who also seems quite proud of her (perversely, in the case of Spoiler, but all his coworkers say things like "so he does have a daughter," which suggests he talks about her as much as any normal parent talks about a beloved kid).
Steph's lucky she got Dinah and not Babs, with that stunt. That story's the one that moved me from indifferent to an outright Steph fan - I mean, holy shit, the nerve on that girl.
