Exactly - what they don't seem to realize is that simplicity is the POINT of the design. The Question design isn't visually effective because it takes a realistic look at what someone's face would look like after you covered it over with a clinging, featureless flesh-covered mask - the Question design is effective because, when done right, it looks like someone has ERASED THE CHARACTER'S FACE with the world's largest eraser. The simplicity of that concept makes it unnerving - if you ran into a faceless man in real life, you'd freak out. Adding in shadows and whatnot just misses the point.
