As a New Yorker, I just want to point out that the aftermath of September 11th, and the aftermath of the Blackout of 2003, gave me a lot of hope for 'general humanity'. When things did go to their worst, people stuck together and helped each other. Sure, it's nothing like the London Blitz, but it does show something more positive than is generally assumed about cities as social entities.
