Superman World of New Krypton #8
.

Supeman and group tries to avert the runaway Callisto moon as it careens right into New Krypton. But the moon relativistic speeds continues to accelerate towards New Krypton. The Kryptonians can't stop it,but then dae thanagarian spaceship arrives and decrease the moon speed using energy from their NTH metal.

Superman then comes up with the idea that a large number from New Krypton help to safely positioned Callisto around New Krypton orbit.

Only fair, seeing as the Thanagarian men like going around bare-chested.

...who had a pretty visable cameo in the mid-90's.

And at least two in the 2000s before this. (Rann-Thanagar War and Countdown to Adventure - although the latter was the Earth-43 version.)

He's fairly obscure, but gets plenty of use for an obscure character such as he.

In the late 90s (including 2000) he appeared in JLA (issues 10-15, from 1997, and 38, from 2000) and Martian Manhunter (4, 6 (1999), 13-16 (2000)).

I don't know of anything for the MID-90s, though I suspect the JLA or MM issues are the ones btravage is thinking of, and just misremembered the dates by a couple years - I'd done the same before looking them up. (I'd just known he appeared in JLA and MM.)

He also apparently appeared in a 2002 issue of JSA, which I would have read, but have completely forgotten, and I also forgot his tiny cameo (appearing in a single splash page) in a Superman/Batman arc - where all the extra-terrestrials on Earth got mind-controlled - until just now.

Why do so many of the Thanagarans lack wings?

Thanagarian wings are all artificial.

As mentioned, the Thanagarians, in the comics, aren't actually winged - the wings are part of their armour/costumes/uniforms (as appropriate). Remember, when they were first introduced, the Hawks pretended to be human. (And, while retcons took Katar and Shayera out of this, there have been Thanagarians who have masqueraded as humans, still.)

The large feathered wings Dae is wearing here, and the Hawks use are fairly atypical, too...most of the Thanagarians we've seen recently seen have had flat metal wings, as part of military armour.

Could be an ornamental thing. When you base your military uniforms already on birds, you would tend to get showier as you move up in rank.

That would be my assumption. Similar significance is probably attached to the fact she's wearing them at all, given that she's not out flying with the Wingmen, but nobody else on the ship is wearing wings.

Hmm. Seems likely that they're an older form, replaced for practical purposes by the metal ones, but retained as an ornament of rank - like officers wearing swords after firearms became supreme.

Wait in Blackest Night, when Chay-Ara and Khufu were resurrected, did they already have wings or were those created by the black rings?

Wait, did I miss an issue? Khufu and Chay-Ara themselves have been resurrected? Man, the Black Lanterns are digging way back...if they're planning to pick up every single life of Khufu and Chay-Ara, the planet's going to be crowded...

But I would assume the rings generated the wings...not only because K&C are human, but because Carter and Kendra have their wings...(Er...I think, anyway. I'm not 100% if that origin of the wings and weapons still holds. Or if Carter's currently wearing his wings, and not Katar's. Oh, Hawkman, why must you be so fucked up?)

I think it happened in Green Lantern 46. And it does say they are from Earth, so I guess the wings were ring generated, that would explain why they're black.

There are scans of the issue here on SD, here's a link to the post.

Thanks - don't know how I missed that issue.

Yeah, from the looks of things, definitely the black rings generating those wings - not only are they black, they're drippy.

I hate how every dialogue in this book is so pompous.
Yeah, yeah, I get it : diplomacy, negotiations and stuff like that explain it...but I still can't be bothered to read it.

I have to agree although there's some scenes that the dialogue doesn't read like this at all. My guess is that since it's co-written by both James Robinsons and Greg Rucka, the pompous dialogue you're picking up is probably from Robinson (his dialogue is really annoying).
