Wow Charles, didn't Magneto helped you right in the beginning of your memory search and left on good terms? in the first couple of issues of legacy. No need to be a ungrateful douche, I understand Cyclops and the team but Charles has no excuse here to his friend here considering the help he gave in the beginning of Charles memory search against Exodus and his acloytes. not couting them building genosha together before Wanda's insanity.

It almost makes me wish Magneto had stayed dead following his murder of Jean at the end of Morrison's run, really. I mean, what more is there that you can do with Magneto that hasn't been done?

He's been the leader of a small sect of mutants, the leader of a massive cult, ruler of his own country, and ascended to the point where he was a pop-culture symbol used by rebellious teens. For all intents and purposes, he's done. He's actually succeeded in a way, because all those teens who once touted the 'Magneto was right' shirts and were suddenly being abused and blown up again following M-Day, they're all going to believe in him.

So I just wish Magneto would stay dead, myself. He's a classic villain, but to me, he's run his course. Of course, superhero books being superhero books, he'll still be fighting the fucking X-Men come 2109, at this rate.

I'd rather Morrison had kept him dead, personally, and the gas-chamber Magneto had never happened. It says a lot that Morrison so horribly mutilated the character that they did have to immediately claim that it wasn't Magneto after all. Dying in the flames of Genosha and then the powerful issue with his last words echoed around the dead island would have been a perfect place to leave the character. Post-Planet X was not, in my opinion. It's curious that Morrison made Magneto a far more compelling character dead than he did when he wrote him alive.

That was the point of Magneto's role in the run. The whole thing was a demonstration of how morally questionable figures can be changed by word-of-mouth (there's very few who know that St. George, for instance, was the Persian son of a pig-farmer who later aspired to own his own brothel), and to satirise the horrible "He's A Villain/He's A Victim" fairy-skip plot that had pervaded Marvel over and over by showing us: he's a psychotic, damaged terrorist.

	He's no more a psychotic, damaged terrorist than he is a charismatic, misunderstood freedom fighter. The truth is he's been both in his time and by forcing the character to be an extreme of one of those, Morrison didn't make him interesting, just unpalatable. (Reply to this) (Parent)

The way you put it in that second paragraph, he sounds like an incredibly poor Dr. Doom imitator.

I agree with you, even without the Xorn fiasco embittering my POV, Magneto's still lost it to all but the nostalgia-mad. As Morrison put it, "...we know he always COMES BACK, somehow, so expect a dramatic return sooner or later, True Believers!"

I get quite annoyed when people complain about Magneto in Planet X, partly because the entire point was to stop romanticising about how decent the character was inside and tell the ugly truth: he really was just a mad old terrorist twat, and partly because Grant had been undergoing an awful lot of personal tragedy at the time, which leaked into his scripting - most especially in that Xavier, the character most like him, is shown powerless, immobilised, humiliated at the hands of his greatest enemy and told that his friends and students are all dead.

Still, it's nice he was able to joke about it later.

The biggest problem, though - aside from whether you agree or disagree about whether he's a horrible monster or a misunderstood victim - is that by rights he should be fucking ancient. The latest account deals with him being born in 1925-6; does the above figure look like a man of 84? Does he look a day over thirty, white hair discounted? Hell, wouldn't Magneto as an old man dying of degenerative disease be far more convincing, character-wise, and fit in with Marvel's pathetic pretence of 'realism' in its plotting approaches?

URGHGHLL. Age him, give him a successor, or just let him crawl into a wooden box and die. There is literally nothing that can be convincingly done with him any more.

	Magneto's been aged and de-aged more than freaking Hawkman. He got reverted to a baby at one time, for Chrissakes. The fact that his hair was originally done white for age means nothing now, because they reverted it to genetic like Pietro's when they started fucking around with his age. 	Given that mutants have been reduced to a handful (most of whom are already running around in spandex), Mags probably realizes his old bickering with Charles is rather pointless. Too bad Marvel didn't realize this before rubber stamping House of M. (Reply to this)

I have no issue with Magneto joining the X-Men at this juncture since they are following his ideas more than Xavier's, but...

A. As (sort of noted) by the OP, Magneto's helmet has never blocked telepathy in the 616. That's the films and the Ultimate Universe. (And if people want examples, I can cite many, many issues.)

B. Magneto's bitchy dismissal of Charles. How did we go from Legacy to this?

C. Magneto bows to/lay his sword at the feet of no one. If Magneto was approaching Cyclops as an equal that would be stretching it, but at least within the bounds of possibility. It just isn't in Magneto to be subservient. Fraction is just warping another character to build up his man-crush Scott. He can't actually show that Scott is a good leader (since Cyclops has been making remarkably stupid decisions lately), so he has to have everyone standing around *saying* Cyclops is a good leader.

The other option is Fraction is making this a "wolf in sheep's clothing" ruse and Magneto will turn on them in a particularly villainous manner...so that Cyclops looks good by comparison and he can get every to shut up about how Cyclops is cribbing from Magneto's playbook.
