I'm probably being a bit hard on the writer and artist - their intentions seem good - but sentimentalizing military history by inserting a fictional hero is at the very least, obscuring some uncomfortable truths. And it's startling how quickly myths become history (watch John Fords "Fort Apache" for a brilliant analysis of this idea.)
