I agree - it's horribly sentimental and border-line offensive. Inserting a comic-book superhero into historical events as a guiding spirit is just awful, and the scene with the suicidal Vietnam vet is... actually, that is offensive. ("Maudlin militarism" is an good phrase and an excellent description of part of the problem.) The "diefication" of some comic characters in recent years has been bothering me a lot, and this is just too much.
