Birds of Prey #99
Huntress is awesome. (Particularly when she beats up villains and not other superheroes.)

Context: The BoP are responsible for putting Yasmine in jail, particularly Huntress. When she's released from jail, she decides to get her revenge on Helena. So she sets up a trap.

For a little bit of unnecessary context, the reasons Babs isn't answering is that she's too busy dealing with Misfit.

Feeling kinda underimpressed, like Helena is beating up some schoolyard bully instead of a proper villain.

I know what you mean. All that build-up and Yasmeen gets taken out easily and all it takes is one threat to make her go yellow. It's tough to come back as a villain after that (by comparison even Fat Elvis Catman in Green Arrow had more dignity).

She is, apparently, on or about Deadshot level.

Deadshot was never known for close-range kickassery, was he?

Gonna have to agree. Not one of her better performances.

I actually didn't even notice Huntress' costume next to that GIANT banana yellow SCIENCE! crossbow.

God that thing's hideous.

Oh, I love this scene. Particularily how freaking psychotic Helena looks with the antenna. You do not mess with Helena Bertinelli's kids, no ma'am.

Nice to notice a tiny bit of stomach roll under Dinah's suit in the "Bizarro Canary" panel. Lizzie Miller eat your heart out.

She caught a student reading one of the Twilight books in class and confiscated it. Out of curiosity, she cracked the thing and took a look.

The capslock was epic. The amazon.com comment page still hasn't recovered.

::snicker:: Oh, this is nifty. 'Brain fu' 'Bizarro Canary'

The total leathery coverup on Huntress gets me off. But the joint shields are a little much. I do miss original elegant pointy Huntress in those old backups.

Dude, their breasts are really prominent in this art. Like, I'm feeling a little be uncomfortable about how highlighted the breasts are in every panel.

I like that...cloak...thing Canary's wearing.

While her normal short jacket's got it's charms, the cloak's more striking.

Okay, what on earth is that thing Huntress is carrying on page one? It's not a crossbow, that's for sure.

Plotwise, I have a couple problems with this - One, IIRC Yasemin was some kind of arms dealer, wasn't she? So how did she get out of prison in time for OYL? Two, just like in Huntress: Year One, here we have Helena, whose life is well established to depend on maintaining her cover, being incredibly blase about a villain knowing her secret identity. What's up with that?

(I'm going off memory here, regarding this story arc, so please correct me if those things were actually dealt with.)

Bizarro retro am disliking Bizarro Canary for talking in most unamusing way. Also disliking Bizarro Canary for not eating hamburgers and pie and gaining a few (Bizarro retro not do that sometimes either). At this rate, Bizarro retro am going to full-on hate Bizarro Canary, but it am big surprise because Bizarro retro hate Gail Simone for years.

woot Helena! not going to lie, wasn't really interested in the story, just idly curious, until Yasemine dropped the "kids" comment. And then my first thought was literally, "What?" and then "Don't you touch the f*#@%^$ kids".

was /very/ glad Helena felt the same way. though I'm sure she'd go back to school, have trouble with the kids, and then think, "Why do I love them again?" ;)

Please allow me to echo all the other posters who called this awesome, and all the reasons they gave for that judgment. I loved this whole scene when it came out, especially because I love psycho-Huntress, and the crazier she gets, the more I love her.

That being said, I thought one of the most interesting things about this story is that, before this, Canary was only thinking about quitting the Birds, but almost right after, she announces that she's quitting, effective immediately. (I'll post scans, if people want.)

That's interesting to me, because this incident is, as far as I can recall, the first time that Dinah has really seen Helena's dark side. And look at the expression on Dinah's face in that last panel: it's plain just how dismayed she is by what she's seeing. So I wonder, to what extent did this incident finalize her decision to leave the Birds? Especially when you think about the conversation they have on the roof as Dinah was leaving.

Lastly, I'm glad we're having a Huntress is awesome week, because have I got some stuff to post.

Good choice on Huntress. I wasn't fond of the character but really thought she shined in this storyline, and had a voice of her own. The "teacher" part was a nice element with just enough level of punch.

Except for the headwings, this is a much more practical costume for the urban vigilante thing. Besides the purple of course, but eh, purple can blend better into shadows than black can, at times.
