I can't speak for nowadays, but when the camera first became popular, one of the To Do things was to have pictures taken of a deceased loved one, including children. Plenty of these pictures included living family members gathered around. Jewelry made from the hair of the deceased was also fairly common. My mom has occasionally 'borrowed' my hair to make authentic hair jewelry for her Civil War re-enactment character, and she raided my father's family's stash of Dead People Photos for the same purpose.
