Cry for Shade
The Shade's latest comic book appearance in the last place you'd expect him to appear.

Well, except for the fact it's a James Robinson written book.

Is it ok if I post the final page to this? Given there have been six pages posted already of this issue (three of the actual story and three to the afterword with Robinson on Prometheus). If not I understand. This page was really the meat of his appearance anyway. So enough of my babble:

Whenever I see tarot cards in DC Comics I expect that thing from the Lucifer series to pop out

I really like the art...too bad about the rest. I love Shade's outfit too- esp. the hat.

An amusing thought occurs, if this means that the Shade might be in the next issue or two, does that mean that Prometheus will come up against him in some way?

Because really, from James Robinson's own characterisation unless Prometheus has some SERIOUS magical back up (like somehow taking away his powers, which only has happened once to my knowledge, when the Shade's dwarf archenemy absorbed most of his powers due to the pair being in the same magical accident), that idiot is going to be wandering into a meat grinder.

Well given how much Prometheus is the villain version of Batman I guess he probably has something only a bat god could come up with to combat the Shade.

Now that would be entertaining. I don't really hate Prometheus but I still think Shade's just classier and more interesting.

Shade has a major weakness, in that he's vulnerable when surrounded by bright light and thus has no shadow.

True but it's also very hard to rig something to make sure he has no shadow at all. And that's the only way to have it work.

But boy almighty I'd love to see Shade beat up Prometheus.

Oh heavens to betsy yes that would be thoroughly enjoyable, just pointing out that the one thing you would have to say for the original Prometheus was that he did his research and prepared in advance before attacking, though he doesn't like random elements like the Shade would take pride in being.

I could imagine Prometheus rigging up a collapsable sphere which would surround the Shade and direct light from all sides, plus preventing any light from entering from outside the sphere to guarantee an even light level throughout.

Oh yeah I'm sure he would. He's the goddamn Prometheus after all but I just can't believe he'd see Shade coming, would anyone really?

When they tried that on the Shadow Thief recently he just used the shadows inside of his body cavities to escape.

Well, that's just cheating... [pouts]

I was going by the Shade's own comments when trapped by "Alias, the Spider" and just before he killed him. The Spider put the Shade (Who'd he'd knocked out) in front of a fire in a fireplace in the belief that Shade would be powerless, the Shade pointed out that that only worked if he was surrounded by light so he had no shadow.

It's possible he might have been lying but, under the circumstances, had no reason to.

I always like when shadow-based characters acknowledge that shadows can only exist because of light. It was pretty awesome when that was an explicit part of Obsidian's powers.

The other problem with research is that the Shade usually performs (in public, at least) at less than peak performance. Prometheus might be under the impression that the Shade isn't capable of using his powers in a fatal manner. Or (worse yet) that Shade can't use his powers without his cane.

That's a beautiful scenario, isn't it? A misinformed Prometheus attempts to disarm the Shade by slicing away the hand that holds the cane. Thinking that the Shade has collapsed from shock after having his hand cut off, he goes to investigate the cane, thinking to see if he can get it to work for himself. But Shade was just playing possum, and after a short interval of darkness, all that's left of Prometheus is a red stain and that helmet of his.

It's a good point. Shade has a lot of abilities that no one sees but the reader. I think Dr. Fate was the only one with him when he confronted Culp the last time? And very few heroes have seen him demonstrate his ability to teleport via the shadow.

Neron and a few others have seen him spawn shadow demons to take out loads of people at once, but other than that, he tends to focus on one person or object at a time, at least in public.

It's also never been established what bright light even does to his powers anyway, as he avoids possibly dangerous situations(like entering buildings on fire) but he's said that nothing can take his powers completely away, which may mean he can't project shadow in perfect light, but remains invincible and immortal.
