I HATE stories where the hero is poor and has to constantly struggle just to get by. They're boring. And far too much like everyday life. How fun was the era where Hal Jordan had worry about how good a salesman he was? How delightful when Wally was amnesiac and had to work all hours as a mechanic so he had marital difficulties--not because of superhero-y stuff--but because they both worked too much? If Peter can take six months off because he just doesn't feel like risking his life as Spider-man anymore and hurting his wife, why didn't his life improve when he could focus on the moneymaking part?
Peter isn't poor because he always sacrifices. He's poor because he's immensely boneheaded and unlucky and the writers think that's an entertaining conflict.
I think you're taking a RL issue and misdirecting it in superhero comic books.
