But that's the point: He does work hard to achieve something: He's Spider-man. He helps others, he's saved hundreds of lives. *That's* where his hard work pays off.
There is also a rather insidious kind of underlying story in the myth of the meritocracy here: "You can be a superhero if you're rich! And if you aren't rich your superior superiority will MAKE you that way!" which puts the rather shady opposite that "if you're not rich/successful it's your own fault, and you should feel bad about yourself!"
