Well, yeah, but that's getting into ancient history. I'm fine with, say, the history of ancient Britain, but the history of the Germanic tribes is a little beyond me. I DO know, however, that just prior to WW1, Germany had a certain reputation as a center of learning, which, to some degree, it still has today. If the world wars had never come along, would the national stereotype of Germans be that they were scholarly types?
