Jonathan Archer ✦ Samantha Carter
Defining things G Complete |
He still couldn’t believe that he’d actually won a gold medal. It had been years since Jonathan Archer had been skiing, there was no time for that with his busy life, but apparently there was a lot to be said for muscle memory. It was exhilarating and he’d be lying if he said that he hadn’t been very proud of himself for winning. It might not be the real Winter Olympics but hey, a gold medal was a gold medal after all. After pictures were taken and medals were handed out, he made plans with Sam to go out to dinner and celebrate. The two had been seeing each other for a while now but they’d never actually put a label on anything. Jonathan liked her a lot, they had a good deal in common and as far as he knew, she was happy and hadn’t been seeing anyone else. He knew he hadn’t been interested in seeing anyone else. Maybe it was time they actually talked about where things were going and since they were both in a great mood, this might be as good a night as any. This whole Olympics things amused Sam, it wasn’t as though anyone who was taking part was really the top athlete in the sport, more just everyone having fun, but regardless there were a lot of good athletes and Sam enjoyed watching all of them. Finding Jonathan at the set time she gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Congratulations again,” she told him on winning the gold medal. Sometimes she was still surprised she was seeing someone, what was what they were doing, after everything with Jack she assumed that’d be it but here in Atlantis things changed, life changed, and she was okay with that. “Thank you,” he said with a laugh. “It’s the closest I’ll ever get to an Olympic medal. I enjoyed watching the others too. Having competitions is better than a bunch of weird stuff happening.” Of course there was no telling what might happen, it was only the beginning of the month. “What, not interested in turning into another stuffed bear?” Sam couldn’t help herself, there were so many strange things that happened here that she was sure something would pop up again. “I agree though, it’s nice to have something that resembles something somewhat normal.” “Pretty sure nothing is going to top turning into a stuffed bear but maybe I should not say that too loud because who knows,” he shook his head. “This has been a lot of fun though. I used to ski a lot when I was a kid but it’s been years. Guess it’s like riding a bicycle.” “Careful what you wish for,” Sam laughed trying not to let her mind wander to all of the strange things that could be stranger than turning into a bear, unfortunately she could think of a few and that worried her. “Maybe before winter is over, we can go out for a day.” “Yeah, I’d like that,” he said. “It would be fun.” Any time he got to spend time with Sam was fun as far as he was concerned but doing something they both loved would be even better. “So what should we do next? We could go back and watch a movie or something.” “I don’t know,” she answered leaning back slightly. “You are the medalist between us, I say it’s your call.” Sam would truthfully be happy doing anything, taking a walk, watching a movie, getting a night time drink. “Let’s go for a walk,’ he said. “It’s not that cold and if it gets unbearable, we can always go inside.” Taking her hand he headed in the direction of one of the parks. It was peaceful and this time of night, not that crowded and they could talk without being surrounded by people. Nodding she linked her fingers in with his as they got into the park, it was comfortable just walking. Sam always thought it was important to be able to just be with someone. After a little while though she spoke. “Any bets on where they’ll be sending people next on a mission?” Archer shook his head. “I have no idea. So far they haven’t needed a diplomat so I’m not as up to speed as I’d like to be. So far none of the places have been anywhere I was familiar with. Well Winnie the Pooh land but I was also a kid and I wasn’t going to share how much I used to love reading those books.” he chuckled. “I guess we’ll have to wait and see.” “Come on, who didn’t love Winnie the Pooh as a child, I know I did, and as embarrassing as it is, Owl and Rabbit were two of my favorites.” She adored the other characters as well, but those two she always felt like were overlooked too much. “Have to admit, some of the places I’ve never heard of either, I keep wondering if we’ll end up with a mission to my homeworld.” “You never know. I ended up here because we were chased here.” He smiled at her. “I’m glad I got to come back though. I was disappointed that we didn’t get to stay longer and not all of that was because of the scenery. I wanted to spend more time with you so I’m even happier that I had the chance to come back.” It had been some time since Archer had connected with a woman the way he had Sam. At home, he didn’t let himself get too close since he never knew when he might be leaving again. Here though it was different. While there was always a chance that he might get caught up in a glitch, for the most part, people chose to stay or not and he wasn’t planning on going anywhere. Blushing was something that Sam had gotten better over the years at controlling, but at his comment she looked down with a smile and a blush. “I’m really glad you got to come back too,” she really was. “Seemed like you came and left pretty fast that first time around.” “It really did. Of course we were in space for part of that,” he said. “We all got kind of attached to this place. Even Porthos.” The dog loved being able to run around in the parks and also all the attention he got from the children. “He’s gotten spoiled with all the attention from Pike and Sulu’s kids. Thankfully he’s been fixed or I’d be a grandfather with as much time as he spends playing with Lauren’s dog.” “He has good taste,” Sam smiled. “Porthos, that is.” She couldn’t help the slight tease. Archer laughed. “He’s pretty perceptive, I’ll give him that,” he said. They were nearing a bench and he led her toward it. “Let’s sit down for a bit. I wanted to talk to you about something.” He immediately wished he had phrased it another way since most conversations in a relationship that started with those words didn’t mean that the rest of the discussion wa going to be good. When they’d settled he put one arm around the bench and moved so he could face her and pick up her other hand. “I guess this is kind of strange considering our ages but I just wanted to make sure we were on the same page. About us, I mean.” He realized that he was nervous and he took a deep breath. “I don’t want to see anyone but you and I hope you feel the same way. I don’t know what you call it but I suppose exclusive would be it. Asking you to be my girlfriend just doesn’t seem to fit when you’re past 40.” Even if that’s what he was asking. Sam was about to ask him what exactly he wanted to talk about as they sat down but he seemed kind of serious so she waited to see where he was going with it. As he started to spoke she started to smile and nod with him. “Jonathan Archer are you asking me to go steady with you?” She couldn’t help but tease him a little bit, it was a funny conversation for when they past the age of 40. “If that’s the case, the answer is yes, I’d love to go steady with you.” “I suppose I am asking that,” he said, laughing. “And good, I was hoping you’d say that. Although I’m afraid I can’t give you my letter sweater or my class ring or invite you to the prom.” Leaning in, he kissed her softly. “But I think we can manage just fine.” “I don’t know if it can be official without the letterman jacket,” she teased after kissing him again. Sam really wasn’t serious at all but she couldn’t help herself teasing about it. After a little while she smiled pulling back. “Come on,” she said nodding back towards the housing complex. |
