arriving, exploring Low complete |
Life had become more and more insane lately. The last thing she remembered was watching an over styled Polaris leave with a bunch of mutants from the underground, including her younger brother. Looking down she saw a coin shining on the dirty concrete floor, bending down, Lauren picked it up. That's when things changed again. Looking around the room, she found herself in she saw blinked as a hologram started to tell her about Atlantis, tell her about what they were fighting. She had her own fight to get back to, her own problems, but as she listened and asked for a few clarifications, it almost sounded like she should help here to even be able to fight for the problems they faced at home. Everything about this world seemed strange to her. "Do I know anyone who is here?" She asked hoping to hear that her parents and even her brother were somehow here. "Lorna Dane is currently among the Atlantis population." The hologram told her. "You're kidding right? Polaris? Because she went off the deep end and I don't even think she can be trusted. Whatever makes you decide who should come here..." "Lorna Dane is unable to hurt anyone here," the hologram told her with little emotion as it continued to tell her what her job assignment would be, how she would finish high school and how her life would continue to move forward in a strange way. The hologram wrapped up its welcome speech and encouraged her to go explore, get settled and meet with a relationship specialist and intake within the next week. It was clear that she had the option to go home at any time but part of her wondered about it. "I'm not going to learn anything from sitting in here," she told herself as she headed out of the room, out of the tower and into Atlantis. Jill was thinking about heading back to Tower 3 when she saw someone with the decidedly “new to Atlantis” look coming her way. It was usually pretty easy to tell when someone was new, especially after having been here for so long. With the time she’d spent in Breck and being here for more than a year, this felt more like home to Jill than anything. The new people didn’t have that air about them yet. “Hi!” she greeted the girl brightly, offering her a friendly smile. “Are you new? You kind of have that newish look. Not that its a bad look or there’s anything wrong with being new...” She was rambling and she knew that, but she couldn’t always stop herself. “Um, hi, I’m Jill.” After everything that had happened she was a little on edge when a girl randomly started talking to her about how she looked new, the truth was, was that she'd felt like the new girl a lot lately and Lauren was starting to wonder if that was just always going to be part of her life. Lauren offered her hand, "It's nice to meet you, Jill, I'm Lauren." She said trying to seem as comfortable with everything as possible. "Yeah, I just arrived. It's a little trippy getting so much information from a hologram." “Tell me about it.” Jill nodded, remembering how weird that part had been. In Breck, there had been a real life person there to greet her and she’d been with her sister within minutes of that. Hearing the explanation from someone she knew had made it easier. Even after the experience of Breck, arriving in Breck to the hologram had been weird. “I’ve been here a while, so if you have questions or anything, I can try to answer them. Or I can show you around, if you want. There’s a map on the tablet, but sometimes it helps to have someone show where the cool stuff is.” "Thanks," Lauren said meaning it. "But right now I don't even know what questions I have." That was also true, there was so much she was still trying to figure it out. "Yeah, I took a look at the map while the hologram was talking some, but it's a lot," she didn't want to just assume Jill would want to show her around. "So, what should I go see first?" She asked unsure she wanted to be too pushy. Jill thought about it. “Well, there are a lot of really great places to eat or I can show you around the base. It really just depends on what kind of things you’re in the mood for, I guess.” One of the things she really liked the most about Atlantis was how diverse it was and how many different places there were to go and things to do. There really was something for everyone here. Lauren let out an almost sad laugh. “You know, I’ve mostly been eating MRE’s lately or stale food, so if there is real food that’s actually fresh, I could go for that.” She thought for a moment to the last time she had a good meal, it felt like a completely different lifetime. Jill didn’t know what an MRE was, but she nodded, offering an encouraging smile to Lauren. “There are a lot of different options for fresh and delicious food around here. Do you have a kind of food you really like the best? There’s a place that serves breakfast ‘round the clock or there’s pizza or Chinese. There are some pubs and, well, just about every kind of food you can imagine!” “Pizza,” Lauren answered after a few moments of thought. It was a normal food, it was a comfort food to a degree and she liked the idea of having something tasty and just normal. Anything normal sounded good to her right now, even though she could tell that Atlantis was anything but. |
