NOVEMBER 23rd - FREE ESPRESSO DAY
23rd November (2017)
Georgina Kincaid ✦ Buffy Summers
Espresso & Shopping PG/Really Tame Complete |
With Christmas just over a month away, Georgina knew she needed to get a move on with her holiday shopping. She’d made a handful of friends in Atlantis that she wanted to buy things for and then there was Roman. Complicated still seemed like the best descriptor for their relationship, especially after sampling the wrong thing at the Guy Fawkes bonfire had led to her feeling brave or stupid enough to suggest they try going out on a date-like thing. Why did she think that was only going to lead to badness? Today, though, today there was free espresso everywhere and if there was something Georgina didn’t turn down, it was free coffee. The shopping would wait until she’d gotten her caffeine fix, so she stood in line at Coffee Me Better waiting patiently for her turn. It was a long wait, but worth it, she thought, as she turned away from the counter, drink in hand, and nearly bumped into one of Atlantis’ resident vampire slayers who just happened to be her roommate. Luckily, Buffy had really good reflexes and somehow the coffee in Georgina’s hand didn’t go flying all over both of them. “Sorry,” she said, flashing an apologetic smile at the blonde. “I guess I need to watch where I’m walking.” "No worries," Buffy grinned at her roommate. "Now, if you'd spilled your coffee all down the front of my new shirt, we'd have to have a talk, but hey, slayer reflexes to the rescue and all that. Honestly, Buffy was wandering a little bit today and she wouldn't mind wandering with her roommate if she didn't have something else to do. It was nearly Christmas and it was the time of year when Buffy enjoyed seeing Christmas greenery out and about and even though she was missing her family a little bit, it was still cheerful. "What did you get?" she asked Georgina. "I was debating between mochas and peppermint, or an Egg Nog latte, but I'm kind of feeling a frappucino, you know? I guess if it's free coffee, then I could have both, but probably not at the same time." Georgina couldn’t help laughing a little at that. She and Buffy both shared a penchant for fashion, even if Georgina was fairly unique here in her ability to just shapeshift away any imperfections in her appearance. She might have the ability, but she still enjoyed the art of doing her own hair and makeup and getting dressed the human way. Not that she wouldn’t still use her powers to enhance that and make herself look flawless. “The white chocolate mocha is kind of my go to,” she admitted, “so I’m biased there.” Today she’d opted for a little peppermint in hers, in honor of the season. It sure didn’t feel like November here, but she wasn’t complaining. Much. Buffy nodded. She didn't usually go white chocolate, but she sometimes did. Really, she had yet to meet a flavored coffee she wouldn't try, and many of them she downright enjoyed. So long as it was free, she was going to take advantage of trying it. "Were you out for something besides coffee? Or just coffee?" Sure, they were roommates, but it didn't mean they kept track of each other's every single move. That would have been a little bit on the odd side. "I was kind of pondering wandering about some shops - look at Christmas present possibilities. You could join if you want?" “Shopping was my next stop, actually,” Georgina said with a grin. “It’s getting too close to Christmas not to get started on my shopping for the holidays.” Doing her shopping with her roommate meant she’d have to save picking up something for her for later, but she was okay with that. It would be fun for them to go look around together. “Where do you want to start?” Buffy took a quick sip of her drink and considered the possibilities. She wasn't entirely certain who she was getting presents for, but she supposed the people she knew from home were good places to start. But what did one get Faith? Buffy wasn't really certain on that front - but she figured from the really brief conversation she'd had with Fred that probably something to do with books or school would be a hit. Granted this wasn't something she knew much about herself, but still… "Maybe the bookshop?" She suggested. "Or we could start somewhere else, but I think at least one of the presents I could get would be something I could get there. Or at least I might have the best luck getting something there - and if nothing else a gift card." “As it happens, I know how to navigate a bookstore in my sleep,” Georgina offered, grinning at her roommate. “Starting there seems like as good an option as any.” It didn’t hurt that the bookstore had a nice cafe where they’d be able to get more coffee if they wanted. Not that either of them really needed more caffeine. “Onwards, then,” she added, grinning again as she gestured towards that path that would take them that way. "Oh really?" Buffy raised an eyebrow. She hadn't really realized that this was the case, although maybe she should have. "See, cause me and books are kind of non-mixy things. The thing I liked most about our school library was the cabinet where the weapons were kept." Granted, she could read a romance novel and sometimes did, but mostly she didn't pick up books so frequently so she didn't really have an idea about what she should get. "I don't suppose you'd have an idea for someone who really, really likes books and science and things that make me confused just reading the dust jacket - do you?" “I used to manage a bookstore,” she explained. “What kind of science is your friend into?” she asked, thinking about the possibilities. “Does he like fiction, too, or just the scientific books?” It had been awhile since she’d been paid to do this on a regular basis, but finding the perfect book was actually something Georgina excelled at. Buffy frowned, what had Fred said that she liked. Physics was it? There had been a portal, she remembered that part. "Just a second it was," Buffy pulled out her phone, one handed trying to scroll back through the network. "I think physics stuff. There was a portal. And… well," she looked up and stuffed the phone back in her pocket. "To be honest, she's not really a close friend, just someone I know from home, that might be a friend, maybe and she knows friends of mine, and I figured I should maybe do a Christmas present for her. But she might like fiction." Buffy took a sip of the coffee and sighed contentedly. "A whole day of free coffee is so my jam, although I may not sleep tonight." Georgina smiled reassuringly. “I’m sure we can find something she might like,” she offered as they reached the bookstore and stepped inside. It only took a moment to find the right section and she guided Buffy toward it. Georgina didn’t know a lot about physics or portals herself, but she found a section that seemed like something Buffy’s friend might like. “This one,” she said, pulling out a copy of The Elegant Universe, “is on Amazon’s #1 best seller list.” There were a handful of other books on similar topics if this one didn’t strike her fancy.” Buffy reached out and pulled the book off the shelf. Truthfully she knew nothing about physics, or portals and it seemed very possible that this would be too simple for Fred. Then again, if it was perhaps she could return it for something a bit deeper and requiring more knowledge? And maybe it wouldn't be. It wasn't as if Buffy could really tell for certain because as she leafed through it, whole phrases were beyond her comprehension and there were charts and things that seemed smart, probably. "If it is on the Best Seller list than lots of people like it probably," Buffy nodded. "I wonder what their return policy is like if it's something she already has…" “14 days with a receipt,” Georgina said without missing a beat. She’d been in here a number of times before and she may have actually scoped the place out within her first week in Atlantis to see how it compared to Emerald City. "Oh," Buffy glanced over at Georgina, and laughed. "Well, maybe I'd best take a picture, and come back like a week before Christmas." Because truthfully, she didn't know if it was something Fred would like. And what if she had already read it. "Or I suppose I could do a giftcard, but that feels so… gift-card-y." Georgina shook her head. “You want something more personal. A giftcard doesn’t have much thought behind it. Half the fun of Christmas shopping is figuring out what your loved ones will really enjoy.” Whether it was this book or another one, she had the feeling Buffy was at least on the right track now. "Exactly," Buffy agreed with a smile, and she slid the book back on the shelf, after noting the title and the location. She could find it again, surely, if she needed to. She took a sip of her drink. "So what do you read?" She asked Georgina. Maybe she wouldn't get Georgina a book for Christmas, but it might be good to to know for future reference. “I’m a mystery girl,” Georgina admitted. “My favorite series is by Seth Mortensen who probably doesn’t exist in your world, but the magic of Atlantis is that his books do exist here.” Of course, she’d checked. Their relationship might have crashed and burned but that didn’t mean she didn’t still desperately want to know if Cady and O’Neill would ever work things out. "I've never heard of them, but I'm not the girl that reads books for fun usually," Buffy shrugged, but she was grinning. She didn't feel terrible about not doing it, she just didn't like it much at all. "Thanks though, I mean, for helping me maybe find a present." She ran her fingers along a display of bookmarks and took another sip of her coffee. "How's your coffee holding up? Are we good? Or do we need to find another coffee shop for round two?" “There’s a cafe upstairs,” Georgina suggested, nodding toward a nearby escalator. “And you can never have too much coffee, right?” That probably wasn’t strictly true, but it didn’t matter as they headed that way to grab another cup before moving on to the other shops. |
