Mara Jade ✦ Rose Hathaway
Girl Talk PG-13 Complete |
Mara had been late for training that morning which was not like her at all. If anything she was usually early but after all that had transpired the night before, she’d been reluctant to get out of bed. She’d had to though and slipped into the room with a sheepish grin. Rose just looked at her, she didn’t say anything but she knew that her friend would want to know what was going on when they were done. Sure enough at the end of the session after Jelena had left, Mara glanced over at Rose who was still watching her. “I suppose you want to know why I was late this morning when I’m usually here before you are.” Rose wasn’t too much of a hardass with her team. It wasn’t like she didn’t have her own habit of being late sometimes. Mara, though, was usually annoyingly on time, if not early. Seeing her walk in late was really unusual. Studying her now, her lips curved into a smirk as she took in her friends overall appearance. “Something happened,” she guessed. It went without saying that she definitely wanted some details. “What makes you say that? Nothing happened, I just overslept,” she tried her best not to smile but she couldn’t help it and then she laughed while Rose just gave her a look. “Okay I did oversleep but not in my own bed. Cassian got back from mission and he was pretty tired so we had dinner and then I went home so he could get some rest but….” she walked over and sat down, leaning against the world. “I’ve known for a while that there was a movie out there about what happened, how he and Jyn and Bodhi came to be here. I even suspected that it didn’t have a very happy ending because he never talks about it. Well I got curious and watched it.” For a moment she couldn’t speak as she thought about the final moments and she had to take a deep breath. Looking up at Rose she said softly. “I watched him die, Rose. He and Jyn. They died together and watching that made me realize that the very thought of losing him was more than I could stand. It hit me like a ton of bricks that I was in love with him. I’d been fighting it for I don’t know how long but seeing that was like having my soul ripped out of me.” “Shit,” Rose swore as Mara explained what she’d done. Normally, she’d probably lecture someone on the stupidity of watching your own canon or that of anyone you actually cared about, but she had a feeling this wasn’t the best time to say I told you so. Plus, there was a lot more to the story that they needed to deal with, too. “Well, it’s about time you figured it out,” she couldn’t help teasing. It was pretty obvious to her that those two were crazy about each other. “Have you told him all of this yet?” She suspected she knew the answer, but she asked the question, anyway. “Last night. Hence while I was late this morning. We didn’t get a lot of sleep,” she tried to look as innocent as possible but failed miserably. “Uh huh,” Rose interjected, smirking, as Mara continued. “But it wasn’t just the obvious. We talked about stuff that we hadn’t really talked about before, it was really great. Neither of us has ever had a real relationship before so we’re kind of flying blind but we’re good at that.” Mara grinned. “He’s….I don’t know how to explain it, Rose, we just fit. Even though I know what happens in my future, that I marry Luke, we have a son together, that doesn’t even seem real. That feels like it’s going to happen or has already happened to another person. I had only known Luke for a few months before we came here but then he decided to go home and left without even saying goodbye so it’s hard to imagine me ever feeling that way about him. We were barely friends, well he thought we were friends, I had no idea what we were.” Rose nodded. It was hard to picture really being with anyone but Dimitri, even if she had those other memories that told her otherwise and she was sure this all had to be confusing for Mara, knowing her future and having feelings for someone else. “You guys are good together,” she said reassuringly. “If it feels right, that’s all that matters. Screw whatever’s supposed to happen in your future. Go with what makes you happy here and now.” “I agree. We are good together. He understands the parts of my life that I don’t like to think about because he’s been there. It’s like we make each other better people which is cheesy as hell but it’s the truth. All my life, I’ve had to do what someone else told me, be what someone else wanted me to be. I didn’t have a choice. That’s why it was so amazing when I was able to buy my own ship, I could go wherever I wanted and I didn’t owe anyone anything.” Mara sighed, remembering the freedom of being out for the first time without worrying about doing what she was expected to do. “Being here, I can finally figure out who I am and what I want and that’s an amazing feeling. Cassian makes me happy, being with him has helped me to discover things I didn’t even know were inside me. And I love it.” “I know what you mean,” Rose said, thinking of Dimitri. He’d been one of the first people who had really seen her as something more than a delinquent or a troublemaker. He’d seen her potential and he’d understood her right from the beginning. It was one of the things she loved most about him.” “I’m really happy for you, Mara,” she added, learning forward to give her friend a hug. There was a time when Mara would not have let anyone get close enough to her to hug her. Not physically but emotionally. That had all changed, she was a different person now and she returned Rose’s hug with a smile. When they parted she said “Thank you. It feels good to have a somewhat normal life or as normal as things ever are here.” she laughed. “But you seem pretty happy yourself these days. Isn’t Ivan having a birthday soon?” Mara seemed to remember that he’d been born not too long after she’d arrived. Rose was pretty happy, despite the little hiccups that came with life in Atlantis. “Next month,” she admitted, shaking her head and giving a soft chuckle. “Can you believe it’s been almost a year already?” she asked. It seemed like just yesterday he’d been an infant who barely gave her any time to sleep and now he was walking. “No I can’t believe it. It’s already been a year for me and you were really pregnant when I met you,” she smiled. “But Ivan’s adorable and it’s obvious that you and Dimitri are good parents even if life here isn’t exactly conventional. Ivan seems to love it.” “I don’t really have a clue what I’m doing,” Rose admitted. “Dimitri’s a natural, but honestly I had no idea what to even do with a baby. I guess I’ve managed not to screw him up too much so far, but I’d still kind of just winging it.” “I bet nobody has an idea what they’re doing at first,” Mara laughed. “And apparently in the future I actually do have a kid and he seemed pretty normal so I guess I didn’t screw up too badly. It just felt strange when he was here because I was so far from being to that point with Luke and I couldn’t imagine us ever being close enough to have a kid.” “I guess a lot can change after enough time.” It did seem weird, thinking of Mara with Luke, given the way everything was now, but she knew things were different here. Even being a parent was different for her and Dimitri here. Their lives were vastly different in Atlantis than they would be at home. She didn’t think that was always a bad thing. Mara knew that Rose was right, this wasn’t home, time was different here, everything was different here and she had to admit that she was happy. “And somewhere out there, we’re all leading completely different lives which give me a headache to think about but it’s true. All that I know is that I’m happy here and I wouldn’t change anything about how things have worked out.” “Me neither,” Rose agreed easily. In spite of the war they were fighting, life in Atlantis was really good. |
