Reyna Ramírez-Arellano & Edmund Pevensie
Coffee Me Better - Tower One • Tue 7/25 PG • Completed thread |
Reyna hadn't been sure she believed the words on the device in front of her. Was it possible? Was this really her Edmund? She sat on a bench outside the coffee shop, turning over the little wooden pegasus in her hands. It was slightly worn now, smoothed by months of being used as a worry object. She carried it with her everywhere - even into battle - as a way of keeping Edmund with her. And now both hope and fear churned in her stomach, turning the battle ready praetor into a hot mess of anxiety. She wasn't sure she was ready to lose Edmund again. But she knew, even if this was some trick of Atlantis and she only had him for one more day or one more week, she wanted to make the most of it. That's what they'd decided - to make the most of the time they had together.
When she looked up, there he was. Reyna was fairly certain her heart had managed to find a way to both stop and lodge itself in her throat simultaneously. She went to run a hand over her braid before remembering she'd worn her hair down for him. Impractical for battle, but a small concession for the man who had stolen her heart. She got to her feet slowly, pegasus clutched tightly in her hand as she willed herself to speak. "Edmund…" was all she managed to get out. The memories of Atlantis had sprang into being as Edmund’s fingers closed around the coin. It was a disorienting feeling. He remembered making plans with Nico for Reyna's birthday, but that memory had almost a year's worth of distance. They’d gotten married, gone into space and been separated. He’d written what he’d believed his last words to her and been grateful for the first time that she was not on the Prettiest Star. He had been, even if he hadn't wanted to admit it, in mourning. Now she was staring at him from across the room, and he thanked the Lion for the mercy. His voice was slightly choked when he spoke. “Reyna.” He drew a long breath and reached out his hand to stroke her hair. The gold band on his finger caught the light briefly. “I’ve missed you.” It was strange how one word could contain so much within it and yet, when Edmund said her name, it felt like coming home. Tears welled in her eyes and she swallowed hard, comforted by the ring on his finger that matched the one on hers. They hadn't had much time as a married couple in her memories, but she still considered herself married to him. She closed the distance between them, wrapping her arms around him and pressing her face against him. "I've missed you too, husband." Edmund kissed the top of her head , breathing in the familiar scent of her hair. The words were beautiful to hear again, the feeling of holding her in his arms sufficient to make up for the months of absence. While they had known their share of separations and reunions, Edmund did not think any of the others quite matched the loss he’d felt on the starship or the gratitude he felt now. He bent his head so that their foreheads touched and whispered, “I didn't expect to see you again outside of Aslan’s country.” "I didn't either…" Although it wasn't the same, because Reyna hadn't expected to see Edmund again - either in this life or the next. It had seemed final. Her hand found his, and her fingers traced over the ring on his finger, reassuring herself that it was there. "Edmund…." She'd dreamt of this moment so often, of what she would do, what she would say if she saw him again, but now she just didn't want to let go. She wanted to know what had happened while they'd been apart, why he looked older now than when he'd left, what caused those worry lines on his face. Instead, she tilted her head and brushed her lips against his. This was her Edmund, regardless of what had happened and she didn't want to waste time sipping cocoa in public. "Want to go for a walk? Or we could go back to mine and talk.." Edmund returned the kiss gratefully. “We could take a walk,” he said, just a shade reluctantly. “Or stay in and talk.” He shrugged a little sheepishly and smiled, lacing his fingers through hers. “I just want to enjoy having you back.” And either have her help in sorting out the tangle of memories in his head or delay doing it a little longer. “It’s up to you.” Reyna's cheeks flushed slightly at his words. "Let's head back and stay in. There will be time enough for walks later." The words were spoken with more certainty than she felt. Her hand tightened in his as they headed back towards the tower - if Atlantis was behaving like normal, it would put them together. "I… I didn't think I'd ever see you again…" she whispered, leaning into him as they walked. Time enough was an optimistic prediction, but Edmund had no desire to dispute it. “I thought,” he began then trailed off. “Do you remember the Prettiest Star?” He thought she and Nico had spoken of remembering space, but it was too jumbled to be sure. "Briefly," Reyna acknowledged. "I wouldn't have remembered the name of the ship, though, that seems like ages ago. But I remember Mt. Weather - and Storybrooke." The latter location was accompanied by a shudder. "After that, Tumbleweed.. our wedding… and then waking up on that spaceship. I was there a few days only before I ended up here. And you were here - but a you that hadn't been in Tumbleweed, but that you'd dreamt of it all. We.. we ended up getting engaged again and then.. You disappeared." There was no point in talking about what that had felt like, they both knew what it was like to lose the other, to lose a piece of yourself. "What do you remember?" That was more complicated, but it sounded as though she hadn't left and returned in the time since he’d been in Atlantis which spared them at least one level of complication. Edmund closed his eyes and then reopened them. “I didn't remember Atlantis until I picked up the coin again,” he said. “In Tumbleweed. The portal sent us back after a few months in space. I think I caught up to you and Nico, somehow, but it's all muddled. I suppose I know why I missed so much of the Island now.” Then he grinned. “Oh, I met Apollo! He was on the ship briefly.” There were quite a few things about space he’d rather not tell her - though he knew he would eventually - but that one had no traumatic associations. “He was there when we all got sick, although he seemed to feel it was outside his purview to assist.” "I don't think I'll ever understand how these multiple universes work," she said as she shook her head. It didn't make any sense, but then she knew enough not to question how things worked. "Really? Apollo was there? Wait, you all got sick and Apollo did nothing? I could punch him for that. Although better Apollo than Juno. I hope you never run into her. " They got to the tower and Reyna pushed opened the door to her room. She'd had it to herself ever since Edmund had left, but not a single thing had been disturbed. She led him to the bed and took a seat, not wanting to let go of his hand. "Ed… I…." “It was called Orion pox. I escaped it, actually, but Su caught it. Lucy and I looked after her. It hit around the same time he arrived, and he was vocal about having had nothing to do with it.” Edmund realized that he was rambling a bit. He trailed to a stop and sat next to her on the bed. The room had not changed since their brief second engagement. It gave weight to the memories in his head. “Yes?” he asked when she did not finish. "Never believe anything a God says," Reyna said with the experience of someone who had been screwed by gods too often. "Did Su recover?" Reyna wasn't sure what to say. Instead she leaned forward and kissed him slowly. "I missed you… I.. I can't believe it's really you." “I wouldn't go that far,” said Edmund seriously. “Susan is all right. Everyone recovered from it. It seemed to be native to that world. All the locals had been vaccinated as children, and those of us who didn't get sick right off were able to get it as well.” He swallowed. “I missed you, as well. It was a-” He didn't really want to go into it all. “Who else is still here? Susan? Peter? Nico?” He’d seen Rose and Clarke reply to Reyna's post, but hadn't seen the others. He suspected his siblings would have tracked him down as quickly as Reyna had which implied a disappointing answer to the question. "Just Nico. Peter and Susan disappeared some time ago. Percy and Annabeth were here for awhile, but then they left as well." Her finger traced idle designs on his arm as she studied him. "I… I thought it would be different here, with us having a choice whether we stay or not, but it's just as cruel as Mt. Weather or Tumbleweed with people disappearing randomly." She rubbed her thumb over the wedding ring on his finger. "There hasn't been anyone else. For me. It's still just you… husband." She tried not to let her voice falter on the last word. She'd given up hope of ever seeing her husband again. It was the answer he’d expected, but it made his heart sink all the same. “Some things may always be out of our hands,” he said with more resignation than he felt. At Reyna's quiet declaration, he squeezed her hand more tightly, partly in confirmation and partly out of desire to hold her close lest she disappear as well. “You are Blood of my Blood and Bone of my Bone,” he recited. Facing death on the edge of the black hole, he’d thought of her. “... Through this life and into the next.” She wished there was something she could do, to ease his burden, the pain of losing his siblings again. Instead, she reached up, her hand cupping his cheek, continuing their vows. "I vow you the first cut of my meat, the first sip of my wine, from this day it shall only your name I cry out in the night and into your eyes that I smile each morning; I shall be a shield for your back as you are for mine..." |
