On the list of things she thought she’d be doing this evening, sitting across from Oliver Wood talking about their relationship was probably the last thing on her list. It wasn’t that Katie didn’t want this to happen, years of wondering what it’d be like if she had just been honest with Oliver about her feelings, but it was still surreal to think that this was actually happening now. She has spent so long telling herself that they were just friends, and she was too much of a coward to risk that friendship, and he was the one that brought it up!
Katie held her drink in her hand, staring down at the liquid. It felt strange to her to suddenly feel so shy around him. She was using to seeing him as a friend, but now that her old feelings were resurfacing, they resurfaced with a bang. “I should be honest with you, now we’re here at this point.” She smiled as she looked up at him. “I’ve liked you for a while. I’ve wanted to say something sooner, but I always chickened out. I never knew you’d see me as more than a friend, and I never wanted to jeopardize that.” She was fairly certain she wasn’t talking too fast. “I do fancy you, Oliver. A lot, actually.” And of course, Oliver was a bundle of nerves too. He was usually self-composed and nothing wouldn’t phase him, but Katie made him nervous, since she was the first gal he really and truly fancied. That and he never did a relationship before, the few dates he had done were purely in denial. He was glad though that he told her, even if he didn’t know if she felt the same way. He assumed that she did, but he was trying to err on the side of caution. He was glad that ale was commonly referred to as liquid courage, since he needed it. Especially as he listened to Katie as she spoke. And it was almost weird how close the parallels were. “It’s weird because I felt the same way about you for the longest time. Since school, actually. But I always thought you didn’t fancy me or deserved someone better than me,” he admitted to her, his words kind of a blur, especially with his Scottish accent. But he breathed and made himself slow down a bit. “I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’m glad that you fancy me.” Katie couldn’t help but laugh now, and she realized why both Alicia and Angelina thought they were being ridiculous. Oliver had liked her for about as long as Katie had liked him. In retrospect, maybe it was meant to be that it happened now and not earlier, but still, all that time, and she never knew. “Sorry,” she said. “I’m not laughing at you! Just the situation, we could have done this ages ago.” Katie shrugged and reached across the table to take his hand. “Still, I’m glad it’s now, and I’m really glad you’re here.” He couldn’t help but to smile at her laugh, since it was cute. Then again, Oliver was shitty when it came to keeping secrets and probably was the last to know how Katie felt. “It’s fine. We really should’ve. But you know us, we’re Gryffindors; we have to do things the hard way,” he teased her as he took her hand. “Though one day I’ll have to fulfill that promise of a proper date. Maybe dinner, if you’re interested.” “That we do,” she agreed. Katie blushed and smiled at him. “Of course I’m interested. After all this? I absolutely want to go on a proper date with you, Oliver Wood.” Once their food came, Katie made some light conversation as she ate. Nothing much, giving him some information about the island and the missions. “There was some things about the missions that I wanted to warn you about.” Katie took a drink, hesitating slightly. “I’m sure you’re aware or at least been told about the dangers of some of these missions. It’s-” She paused. “I died.” She didn’t exactly mean to blurt it out, but she did want to warn him. “I don’t really remember it, but the island brought me back. I’m not sure how it worked, but according to the medical team that tried to help me, I got hurt and died. Alicia’s been hurt pretty badly too and Angelina. They’ve all recovered and as far as I know, anyone that’s died has come back.” She looked at him carefully. “I just wanted to tell you, give you a warning and of course if you’re ever called out on a mission, I want you to be careful.” “Well, then, how about Saturday evening if you’re free?” he told her, clearly he was teasing her, but he head to have some fun. That was just typical Oliver for you. And once their food arrived, he listened as she told him about the island and the missions, since it made sense to hear about them through someone like Katie. Especially given that he was new in town. And then he heard that word, that Katie had died while she was here, granted, she came back, but it did remind Oliver of when he came to help out with the Battle of Hogwarts. He was used to death, but it always rattled him. “I’m glad that you’re alive and well though,” he admitted to Katie, “but if I do go on a mission, you’ll have my word that I’ll be careful. Especially since I want to get back to you safe and sound.” “Saturday evening it is.” Katie agreed. Katie was sure that she could guess what Oliver might be thinking, after how Alicia reacted with Katie, she knew the underlying emotions her friends would have. After all they had been through, they certainly didn’t need any reminders. Unfortunately with the dangers some of these missions may possess, it might be a reality. Thankfully it wouldn’t last for long, but that doesn’t mean the initial shock wouldn’t be painful. “Good,” she replied. “I would very much like that too.” She tried to smile. “Enough of that talk now, right? We should focus on happier things. Still up for a walk after dinner? Might be a bit cold but I’m sure we can find a way to keep warm.” “Oh, I know we can find some ways to keep ourselves warm or we can always improvise if it gets too cold,” he told her, teasing again, even if he was referring to blankets and warm drinks. Even if his mind could wander easily. Typical Oliver. “Though right now, let’s enjoy this food before it gets to be too cold.” |
