Sharon Carter & Bucky Barnes January 24th (backdated) Sharon's Room in Medical PG - Injuries, Tarturus & Poker. Complete |
All that talk about lucky charms had to have jinxed something. That was Sharon’s last conscious thought followed by really inappropriate laughter as she lost consciousness in Tartarus, finally succumbing to her injuries as she saw the last of their opponents fall. It would have been funnier if she wasn't pretty sure Steve was going to be pissed. Having that be her last thought ever probably would have sucked, so it was a good thing she woke back up eventually. She wasn't in a lot of pain when she came to, but she was woozy and pretty sure they were giving her some really good drugs. It was when those wore off that would be the bitch, she knew from experience. This wasn't Sharon’s first rodeo. “How are you feelin’?” the doctor questioned her. “Pretty good,” she answered with a weak grin, “but that's probably the morphine.” Dr. McCoy just chuckled at her and checked a few things before asking if she was up for visitors. “Why not?” she said, slowly pushing herself into a seated position. “No more than two at a time,” she heard him tell... she thought it was probably a nurse. Sharon didn't expect a whole parade, anyway. She had friends here, sure, but just a handful of people she was close to and she wasn't sure her fellow agents weren't still on the mission. While all of the teams were gone, Bucky made sure to keep up with the progress as much as he could. He would have done so with or without his friends being on the mission, but considering those that were gone he had all the more reason to keep tabs on their progress. Even without the illogical need to be on one of the teams as he had when he'd been under the influence of a spell, Bucky still wished he could have gone for a variety of reasons. He felt restless and useless back in Atlantis, and when the news came that Sharon was hurt, ot didn't take him long to make the trek to the medical ward. As far as he knew the others were still on their missions or at base camp, so he didn't know if anyone would be there or not. He sat in the waiting room for what seemed like hours. His leg bounced as he leaned forward in his seat and waited to be given the okay to go back or when the doctor came to give an update. Finally, one of the nurses waved to him, and he was out of his seat and heading back through the rooms and rows of hospital beds. Not as many people seemed to have been injured this time around which was a good thing. The nurse led him to where Sharon looked to be resting, and he approached quietly. He could see bandages and bruises, but she wasn't hooked up to any major equipment like Steve had been when he'd been hurt. When she opened her eyes, he gave her a slight smile. “See, I told you I should have gone with you” he said, mostly teasing. “How are you feeling?” “Like a hellhound used me for a chew toy,” she answered, rolling her eyes at the comment that he should have gone with her. “Remind me to talk to my travel agent. Tarturus is not the fun vacation spot you’d imagine.” She smiled fondly at him, glad he was here. The obsessive need to be near him had faded shortly after Neal went back to normal, but Sharon was still glad to count Bucky among her friends here in Atlantis. He'd started out as just Steve’s friend and most of what she'd done for him back home had been for Steve. A little for Peggy, too, she supposed, and because it had been the right thing to do, but it wasn't until Atlantis that she'd been able to get to know him as just Bucky. It hadn't taken her long to figure out why Steve was so blindly loyal to the man. “You're just jealous you missed out on all the fun,” she teased him, sitting up a little more and trying not to wince when the movement pulled at stitches and made her thoroughly cracked ribs hurt even more. “I saw people mentioning Tartarus, but they didn't give specifics. It was that nice?” The world of Narnia had been unusual to say the least. Talking animals and evil queens, but nothing completely out of the ordinary all things considered. This mission though almost seemed to have a bit more sinister aspect to it for some. “Missing out on the fun might be some part of it.” Bucky pulled up a chair next to the bed that had been against the wall. In any other circumstance he might have thought she was joking about the hellhounds but for some reason he assumed she was being serious. Having friends other than Steve was still taking some getting used to, but he knew it was good for him. It kept him connected to Bucky and distanced him from the Winter Soldier more and more. Sharon was somewhat of a friend before here but only indirectly. The only contact they'd had previously was when he'd been triggered or the meet up when she'd helped the group by giving them their gear. “Have they give you any idea on how long you'll be in here?” He asked because he knew the length of the hospital stay was related to how bad the injuries were, and Sharon didn't have Steve's faster healing. Sharon shook her head. “Toxic air, but at least we had masks. The rivers had some interesting effects on us and there were monsters just about everywhere we looked. It’s amazing we didn’t have our biggest casualties until we reached our goal.” She’d been knocked out halfway through that battle only to wake up here in medical with a number of her own injuries, but she’d gotten word from her team that they’d won the fight and freed Morpheus. The dreams had stopped and they’d gotten a piece of map. All in all, she’d call it a success. She shrugged slightly when he asked how long she’d be in here. “A few days, at least,” she said. “They have those same bone healing pills SHIELD uses, but even with that, I guess they want to keep an eye on me for a while.” Her ribs weren’t the other things that had gotten cracked in the fight, but she knew she was lucky compared to what it could have been. Natasha was in worse shape, from what she understood. “It sounds as if you picked one of the short straws for your destination during the mission.” Bucky had been a lot of horrible places and seen a lot of horrible things; hell, he’d been the cause of a lot of them, but toxic air, monsters, and rivers that could have negative effects? He hadn’t ever seen anything like that before even on his own mission last month. He didn’t like the idea of her being there whether he was influenced by a bored god or whether he had his head on straight. He knew he couldn’t watch everyone all at the same time, but he didn’t like any of his friends being gone while he stayed put. Not just Sharon when he was over dramatically in love. “Keeping an eye on you for a little while is a good idea. If anything, it forces you to get some rest after the mission rather than putting yourself back to work. These doctors know exactly what they’re doing.” He didn’t smile, but his eyes showed some amusement. If she hadn’t been injured this badly, he knew she’d be either fighting to get back to her team or finding a way to help out in some way in Atlantis. “Well, if there’s anything you need or I can bring you, let me know. I may as well try to be useful while everyone else is still gone.” “Someone had to go,” she said, shrugging. The mission had gone pretty well up to that point, even if it hadn’t exactly been fun or easy. She’d probably be fighting to get back, anyway, if she hadn’t known it was almost over. They’d reached Morpheus’ cage and she’d already been told her team won the fight. It sounded like they’d be on their way back to camp soon. “Oh yeah?” she grinned at him when he mentioned keeping an eye on her. “You volunteering for that job?” She could tell he was teasing her, but she was actually glad he was here. Most of the people she was close to were on mission or busy with their jobs here and it was nice to have the company. “Come back later with a deck of cards and I’ll kick your ass at poker,” she suggested with a smirk. “When they’re not letting you force your way onto missions, it’s as good a job as any,” he replied with that same slight teasing tone. Easy conversation didn’t come often for Bucky, but he’d been able to get to that place with Sharon since they’d arrived here. They’d been through more than most though. Whether it was trying to kill her, her helping them, or even a magical, obsessive infatuation “Cards and poker I can do. I doubt they’ll let me sneak in beer to go along with the game, but I’ll see what I can come up with.” Bucky looked her over again, not liking the fact she was here, but was grateful that it wasn’t any worse than it already was. Glancing back, he watched some of the nurses and doctors scattered around attending to other patients. “I should probably go before a doctor comes around and gets on me for not letting you rest. I’ll be back later tonight with those cards.” “Damn.” Sharon flashed a grin, kidding as she was sure beer wouldn’t exactly mix well with whatever they were giving her. “I guess I’ll have to settle for card games and company, then.” Even though her tone was light, she was touched that he was here. The infatuation had worn off soon after Neal went back to his normal self, but there was a certain affection for Bucky that lingered and had nothing to do with him being Steve’s best friend. She didn’t feel that obsessive need to be near him anymore, but there was a certain comfort in having him around. Friendship wasn’t something Sharon had left a lot of room for in her life, but she counted him among that small number now. It touched her to think he might feel the same way. “Don’t tell me you’re afraid of Simmons,” she teased him, shaking her head. She didn’t actually blame him if he was. Jemma Simmons might be tiny, but she could be as intimidating as the Hulk when she wanted to be. Bucky actually laughed lightly. He wasn’t afraid of Doctor Simmons exactly, but she did have a way about her that was commanding in a way that he didn't want to disobey doctor's orders. He'd worked with her a handful of times for his mind issues, but what with the missions and other duties and strange happenings, they hadn't had as much time lately. “Not afraid, but I wouldn't want to cross her.” There you go. Spies and deadly soldiers he could handle, but the highly trained assassin didn't want to cross a scientist. “Not beer, but maybe something better to eat than what they might be giving you here.” Out of some sort of instinct, Bucky squeezed her hand briefly with his normal one, but pulled away just as quickly. “I'll let you get that rest. You'll need it for this high stakes poker game.” He offered her a small smile before leaving. He felt better after seeing her, thankful that her injuries weren't worse than they already were or could have been. |
