“So, you’re probably not an ascended ancient pretending to be a hologram?” Samantha Carter said as she swung her legs over the side of the bed listening to the hologram. “I am not.” It responded in a polite tone. “If I’m to understand correctly, you’re telling me that I’m from a world of fiction and brought here to try and battle COS Agents to save creativity, which includes the existence of my world as well as the worlds of other ‘fictional’ worlds?” The hologram started in on its canned response. “Okay, well, I guess I’ll go figure out where I work.” She said with a loud sigh. “Atlantis 2. Daniel would love this.” Samantha muttered to herself as she moved to the balcony and looked out over it. Her mind rushed with how Daniel, Vala, Cam, Teal’c and O’Neill would take this. Sam knew the best thing to do was find someone in charge and figure out what needed to be done so she could get back to where she was needed most. Finding some shoes, she headed out of the apartment into the shared common space curious to explore but still desperate for more answers. She made her way down the stairs into the main lobby of her housing building. She'd seen the map, but it was overwhelming to see how similar to Earth some of the amenities were but different at the same time. "This is remarkable. This city must be old." She said to herself as she made her way outside. It was modern with hints of older architecture, and thus far everyone was speaking English adding some other questions into her mind. A large part of Sam wished Daniel was there, she was sure he'd have some sort of idea about this place. “Hi there!” Nyota greeted the unfamiliar figure with a friendly smile. As many people as there were in Atlantis, she was good with names and faces and tended to know who was in the city with her, so she tended to notice when someone new crossed her path. “You’re new?” she questioned, anyway, trying to be polite more than anything else. Turning towards the voice, Samantha smiled nodding her head. “It looks that way yeah.” She confirmed. “I’m Colonel Samantha Carter.” She said “US Air Force.” Although she knew perfectly well that might not mean anything to the woman standing in front of her. “Nyota Uhura, Starfleet,” Nyota said, reaching a hand towards Samantha. “Well, formerly of Starfleet, I guess. Here, I’m a communications specialist for the Agency. My normal life is kind of on hold.” All of theirs were, she supposed, but it was hard to really shake off the past. “Star Trek.” Samantha said in a matter of fact kind of way. “Sorry my…. friend is a big fan he kept trying to get our ships named after the enterprise.” She told her with an amused smile. “Looks like mine is as well. What can you tell me about the commanding officer?” Nyota waved off the apology. “After a couple of months here, I’m used to it. It gets even weirder when you run into people who look like the people you know from home.” Having Khan’s facetwins here hadn’t been easy. She knew Sherlock had been sent home and she hadn’t seen the other one in a while, either, which she thought was a good thing. “Poseidon? He’s a good guy,” she offered. “I’ve just been here a couple of months, myself and I don’t get as much face time with him as the field agents do.” “People who look like people who you know from home?” Samantha asked, while she understood the concept it still sounded weird and took a moment to think about how that might work. “I’ll be interested to meet him. I’m sure if they have the technology to bring people here with a coin they have a lot of other interesting technology as well.” Uhura nodded. “We call them face twins. It makes sense when you consider the multiverse and the limited number of faces possible, but it’s still pretty weird when it happens to you.” Even if it hadn’t been Khan it would have been something to get used to. He’s a brilliant man,” she mentioned about the Admiral. “The technology here is pretty good, too, even by my standards. They have a lot of things from different worlds. I guess that’s the advantage of existing out of time.” “It does, it is a little jarring to think about them being completely different people, but the infinity number of realities and how the smallest things can change how something happens, well it is possible. I also suppose being fictional has something to do with it too.” Samantha said with a smile. “I guess that would help.” Sam agreed. “It is a little strange to think about this as a war, not that it isn’t believable or logical, merely that it’s one of those things that takes a minute to sink in kind of thing.” “It sinks in more after you go on your first mission.” She’d had that same feeling before Narnia. She’d been pretty safe in England with the team there, but the teams in Narnia hadn’t been so lucky and even Jim had gotten seriously hurt. She’d missed a lot of the worrying with being off on her own mission, but she knew he was lucky he’d made it. That was enough to drive home the fact that what they did here was dangerous. “What have the mission's been like so far? If you don’t mind me asking.” Sam asked thoughtfully. Strange and dangerous missions were something she was surprisingly used to. There were a lot of questions about it and what was or wasn’t possible. “The first mission took us to Narnia,” she answered. “I was on a small team sent to England, but most of our agents were in Narnia trying to make sure everything went the way it was supposed to. The COS was too ready for us. They set some traps and we had a number of casualties, but in the end we won.” She paused just a second before adding, “this month, we have people in the world of Rick Riordan’s books. Are you familiar with them?” She’d only been vaguely familiar, but she also hadn’t been picked for a team. “A handful of teams were sent on various quests to find items that are supposed to lead to a weapon we can use against the bad guys. I wasn’t briefed on that one, so I don’t have all the details on it.” “Narnia? As in the books? The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe?” Sam said but held a hand up indicating she believed it. “COS sounds like they must be pretty well organized to figure out how to set traps. Glad to hear they won.” Samantha frowned at the next comment. “I have no idea what you’re talking about, but I get the impression that’s going to be the case here for everyone. We can’t possibly know all worlds.” She said with a shrug. “Sounds like it’s an important mission.” “The library here is pretty extensive,” Uhura offered. “You can find every piece of fiction that’s ever existed or will exist here, so it’s a good place to go if you want to read up on the worlds you don’t really know. The teams have been out for a while, so hopefully they’ll be back soon with good news.” “I guess I’ll have to find my way there, I’m sorry my friend Daniel wasn’t the one to show up, he’d be in heaven right now. A library with that much information would be a dream come true for him.” Samantha said thoughtfully. “When did they head out?” “Almost two weeks ago,” Uhura answered. “Most of what we’ve heard back has been positive and I doubt they’ll be gone that much longer.” That was what she hoped, anyway. She was hopeful that there hadn’t been as many serious injuries reported this time so far. “Do you want me to show you where the library is?” she offered. “I hope they return safely, and it was a productive meeting.” Sam said with a nod. “Yeah, that’d be great. I’d love to see it. Thank you.” |
