It had been a busy day at the office, which meant that Arthur was running a touch later than usual. Quite a bit later than usual, actually. He was already planning his apology to his wife -- with all of the children out of the house now, it was even more important for him to get home on time so that they could enjoy the evenings together. Still, there was just a little left to do. He was one of the last to leave the Ministry when he finally packed up his bag, and a little bleary-eyed from staring at parchment all evening. It was, therefore, not too much of a shock to him that he was seeing things. It was, however, a shock when he suddenly found himself somewhere entirely different than the fireplace he’d meant to floo out of. He’d sat down pretty solidly in a chair upon arriving in this new place, listening with quiet fascination to the explanation that was given to him. It took a few moments post-explanation for the questions to come, but they did -- in multitude, and with enthusiasm that far surpassed how exhausted he was. He’d cycled through now, pushing past tired to revolve right back to excited. The most important question, though, had to do with his family, and he was glad to hear that Molly had been notified of his arrival. Questions answered well enough, and new arrivals coming through that required more attention than he did, he’d tossed his bag back over his shoulder and pulled himself to his feet, stepping out of the chaos of the Intake room and making his way outside to wait for his wife. It had taken a week, which wasn't that long compared to some of the stories Molly had heard of people waiting for loved ones, but it still seemed far too long. She’d left supper in the oven, now that she'd learned to manage the appliance, and come hurrying to the base as quickly as she could. There was a crowd of people outside the Intake office. When Molly had arrived, she'd been the only one of the day, and it had been much quieter. Intake had seemed rather overstaffed at the time. Now she wondered if there would be enough. She made a note to bring some biscuits by later, while she scanned the crowd leaving Intake. “Excuse me,” she said as she squeezed past a young man carrying a rather nice broom. “I'm looking for my-” Just then she spotted the familiar face. “Arthur!” He received a hug first and a kiss (not too long for public viewing) and then a not-particularly stern, “You're late!” She hugged him again and threaded her arm through his. “Oh, Arthur, this place! How much have they told you?” He’d spotted Molly just before she called out his name, her voice sticking out above the crowd and that familiar red hair catching his eye. After so many years together, there was nothing the world that calmed him quite like the sight of his wife, and that held true even in the face of this absolutely impossible circumstance. He returned the hug sweepingly, and the kiss as well, the ‘stern’ words earning a crooked, apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, love. I think I took the wrong floo,” he half-joked, a bewildered laugh in his voice. He pressed a kiss to the hand that was woven through his arm, shaking his head at her question. “More than I could’ve ever begun to understand. What in Merlin’s name is going on, Molly?” Molly blushed, beamed, and began steering the way out of Intake. “I've only been here a week myself,” she said. “Charlie and Ginny and Harry were here before me. They'll be looking for you.” Molly shook her head. “It sounds like a story. There's a war, they say, and they need us to help win it. We're from one world and there are hundreds of others - people out of books - and the past, Arthur!” That was the part that still took her breath away, enough that she might not have been entirely clear. “They have some kind of time travel here, and Emmeline and Remus and Sirius are all alive.” She blinked back tears for those most recent losses and added, “Marlene! Lily and James Potter! Benjy Fenwick, as much of a shameless flatterer as ever. Aberforth is about and too young for any of us to have been born yet.” The war was still something to be dealt with, but those miracles occupied first place. Arthur let her lead their weaving pattern, but he did naturally adjust so that he could keep anyone from bumping into her. His smile grew as she mentioned the kids: “I hate that the others aren’t here too, but I suppose there’s still time.” He listened as she explained, pausing just a bit to look at her with almost disbelief at her words. “That’s… unbelievable. What a beautiful gift for the holiday, to see all of them again.” The losses had been so numerous over the years, with both wars, and each of those scars still weighed heavily on those who survived. The idea of seeing some of those faces once more was almost too much for him to believe. Molly smiled, albeit a little tearfully. “I'll take it for that alone, especially now that you're here.” In a few moments they reached the lobby. “There's a howling blizzard out, but we can apparate from here.” She blinked the tears away (she wasn't sad, not really) and added just a bit teasingly. “If you trust me to take you home.” “I’m sorry again for my tardiness, love,” he responded, offering a smile at her beautiful, tearful face. “Ah, yes, because I am notoriously distrusting of my spectacularly brilliant wife,” he teased back, a laugh escaping him. “Take us home, Mrs. Weasley, before we become icicles.” Some people, Molly had gathered, had been in Atlantis months at a time without spouses or family near. She couldn't imagine it. True, she'd opted to stay, but she had at least had her children, and even then it had been strange not to have Arthur beside her every night. The little house in the Heart complex seemed more that much more homey than it had when they apparated into the living area. With no one to share the house, Molly had rather taken it over. There were tidy baskets of yarn all around the room for Christmas presents that had become two weeks more urgent than back in Ottery-St-Catchpole, as well as a knitted doubly over the couch from when Molly had decided the room needed more color. She'd clearly been busy while left to her own devices. She gave him a kiss before stepping away. “Welcome home, Mr. Weasley.” It wasn’t really home, not in the sense that he’d been expecting when he stepped into the fireplace at the Ministry, but his home was certainly wherever Molly was. As a result, he felt a sweeping sense of relief as they relocated into the little house. He returned the kiss as it was giving, a warm smile on his face afterwards. “Thank you,” he responded, and took a moment to look about. “It looks just as I’d have expected. You’ve clearly added your touches.” |
